Evidently, someone in the R and D departments at these companies was sitting around one day thinking, "we need a product that's incredibly heavy, tough to get into a car, and gives the user no flexibility if either the speakers or amplifier fail .... I've got it!"

Close but not quite.

In 2005 Eden put out a Nemesis NC810 which had eight 10" speakers and a built in 400-watt (RMS) FET amplifier. The Eden "Nemesis" series was a gateway series to pull you into the Eden fold. By the time the 2007 catalog rolled around, it was no longer offered.

not quite as humongous as the 810 combo's being shown, but Mesa made a Venture combo which was a MPulse 600 head built into a pretty massive 2x12 + tweet cab. As you can imagine, given Mesa's rep for building amps/cabs that can withstand a nuclear direct hit, it was a very heavy sucker. Sounded good though. I used one for a time and just for fun, I used to stack it on top of a Powerhouse 1x15 for all kinds of speaker cab mis-match fun.

By definition a combo is a small sized group. Traditionally small jazz ensembles would call themselves combos. So a large sized combo is a bit of a contradiction.

I was in a combo and, being financially embarrassed, we all plugged into the same small amp. There were three of us, it was hard enough to split the gig money. More members and we wouldn't have been able to afford strings. The amp morphed from one then another Sears Silvertone amp. The Silvertones sounded great, we pushed them hard, but they were noisy. Eventually everyone got their own amp and we had a PA. The guitar player had a big Traynor combo amp with 610's.

Well over 100 pounds of sluggo.

Had one of these and even with the casters it was a total B#$%h to lug around. I can't even imagine moving some of monsters in this thread :***:

ha! at one point back in the day (1973-4 ??) I had a Baldwin Professional 2x12 (?) bass amp with those ridiculous plastic tab "tone selectors" like the ones on this monstrosity.

Wow! Forgot about those with the Moog look and layout on their front panel. Didn't they have tube power stages but solid state preamps which is the exact opposite of how it's mostly being done with today's hybrids?

Not sure how the preamps worked, but definitely had a tube power amp. Was covered in a denim-like material, too.

Does anyone else find the name "Exterminator" rather an oddly aggressive choice for a Baldwin? I am guessing this monstrosity dates from the sixties or early seventies at the latest...were they aiming for the nascent hard rock market?

In any event, I think may have developed a hernia just looking at it...
