So I'm looking for a new fuzz (aren't we all?). I have some standard bases covered with my Grey Stache (w/ diode and tone bypass mods) and a TAFM. But I'm looking for something fun and different. Maybe even a little weird. What fuzz has inspired you to play a bit differently? You can't help but kicking it on whenever you play because of the joy it sparks in your heart? Maybe it doesn't always work in a band setting, but you love it anyway because it's so damn fun. Not looking for clones or simple mods of typical fuzz circuits (muff, tone bender, etc...). Could be a little synth-y, gate-y, octave-y, envelope-y... as long as it's mostly a fuzz at heart.
Brassmaster? (Malekko B:assmaster or Diabolik) - seems the logical choice with the two you already have. Great article on weird fuzzes from this year: https://delicious-audio.com/best-crazy-weird-unusual-fuzz-pedals/
The Source Audio Ultrawave. It does a whole variety of dirt and I probably go down some rabbit holes with it where I'm not even sure whether you'd call it fuzz or distortion sometimes, but yes there is definitely fuzz there. Just some simple uses of even the more usual base algorithms there gets weird and fun. Like, adding fuzz to every other frequency band, or only to one or two bands. Or cascading drives with very different frequencies distorted. synth-y - check (has various 'foldover' options) gate-y - check (has several gated options) octave-y - check (has several octave options) envelope-y - hrmm?? (it has a 'morph' function that I think can work on an envelope basis and I'll confess I haven't even explored that in part because I have an Empress Zoia that does some really advanced envelope stuff. It does have some algos that just have a mild envelope sound even without that though)
Easy. I was gonna post an oscillator fuzz or some wacky clipping fuzz but your OP asks. This makes me want to play differently and explore. Get one. Fast. It’s a follow filter and a fuzz and the signal is split so both are electrically seeing clean signal from your bass so you can live off your attack.
Before I got the Source Audio Aftershock and Bass Ultrawave my most fun fuzz was the DOD Boneshaker because there were so many crazy things possible with that tone circuit. https://www.digitech.com/discontinued-products/Boneshaker.html
Does it Doom- Walpurgis. Basically a 69 Laney Supergroup circuit with a rangemaster boost, super cool sound.
I've been enjoying the Hizumitas. So much so, in fact, that I want to get cheap P bass for BEAD tuning.
Anything Dunwich. I do love my Ultrawave too though. I still havent figured it all out yet and you can get lost for days just noodling around with it. I also recently acquired an IronEther Oxide. At first it didnt do much for me but the more I explore the more I like it. I will probably never part with that one.
my first instinct is to say Fuzzrocious muff into rat but my funnest fuzz is a prototype Mills Custom Amps Atlas fuzz. The only thing I've heard that gets similar is a Shoe pedals Pixel
Darkglass duality is my favorite. One of the two fuzzes is gated and is nice for creating synth sounds.
Shrieking psychosis. Like a rabid dog at the end of a leash that you can barely hold on to. Definitely not for your praise and worship band.
Mooer Fog Bass, it's a gated fuzz. I have a compressor in front of it and it gets such an awesome sound for guitar, I'm scared to touch either one
The silver MXR bass distortion and the M85, the Diabolik for gated, and Wooly Mammoth clones, as well as the Zvex Basstortion are current faves. And the Fulltone Fat Boost, cranked.
+1 for the Woolly Mammoth! I have a very love/hate relationship with it, but I will forever have one on my board. It’s huge, wild, can go from being gated/synthy to sounding like a big muff on steroids. It’s also extremely temperamental and completely unpredictable at times. Unfortunately, almost no demos on YouTube, I feel, do this freak of a fuzz any justice.
