Please help: watch this video featuring Mars Cowling and see if you can determine what kind of effect he is using to color his sound... you have to really listen, but I can hear it distictly in places: Thanks!
I'm going to guess "P bass played with a pick, through an SVT"... ...and then I'm going to watch the video.
Hehe- Mars is definately using his fingers I agree at first it doesnt sound 'effected'- and maybe thats not how I mean to come across... His sound is colored nicely- like maybe new roundwounds sound combined w/ some slight phase or flange type coloration (strictly a guess)
Well, I got the P bass part right anyway. Based on the bridge, I'm even going to say it's an Aria P, not a Fender. His rack included a Tubeworks MosValve amp, and a tuner. There were a couple other rack items I couldn't make out. I didn't hear any effects, but the tone overall sounded a lot like something I could get with the VT Bass pedal.
Thanks Bongo! I thought that it sounded so good. Really reminds me of Go for what you know era Mars...
Oh, and FWIW it's pretty common for videos to sound a bit "phased" or "flanged" if the video was recorded live, if it's an old video, if it was compressed much, or if it was transferred between media. This was probably "all of the above".
