What's wrong with the Fender Dimension Basses?

To no one in particular by now...
In my case, the fair question would be, “what’s wrong with every kind of bass that I don’t own?”.

A while back I read all the negative stuff people had to say- most of it was that it’s ‘fender trying to do a musicman’
One day I picked one up in a GC and instantly fell in love with it, walked out with it that day. Mine feels great, and I really really really like how versatile it is. I also must remark that I don’t feel like it sounds like a musicman, I still don’t like musicmans (musicmen?), and I yawn at people who condemn fender for trying something outside of 2 basses.
Mine is the dual pickup with active preamp. I never thought I’d like a 5way switch with no blend but I LOVE IT. Going full neck does a good job of fitting songs that want a Pbass (I’ll stop short of saying that it does the Pbass thing, I don’t have the energy to deal with the flames lol). The inner split and outer split do two different and nice flavors, including 2 distinct and delicious slap tones. The most surprising thing was that I find the onboard preamp very usable and subtle, while powerful. Really made me realize that other preamps I’ve used have TOO MUCH boost on tap.
Can’t say enough for how much I like mine, it’s the only non pawnshop impulse bass buy that I’ve ever made.

All three of my Dimensions were impulse buys. They kept going on sale for half price so I kept buying them.
I picked up a Squier Dimension IV on SDOTD and I think it's a fantastic bass.
I don't really play it as often as I should though. I'm a P-Bass guy and tend to pick up one of mine when I'm noodling around and definitely when I'm playing with other folks I'm playing a P-Bass variant.
That being said, I'm holding on to the Dimension just in case I need that sound at some point..

As a player who hasn't traditionally had GAS for basses, I've just kinda started looking into what's out there. I will admit I'd never seen the Dimension series and a couple of the models really caught my eye. I will be testing them out next chance I get.
... and I ordered the Dimension Elite V HH. Will be here next week.

I guess so. The one I ordered was the only one in the entire GC system right now. Did they discontinue them?
Yes, there are only a few left here in the UK. I propably bought the only American Standard V HH I could find in Europe. I love it.

On a 2nd thought about Fender's oddball basses.
They seem to creep back after 15-20-30 years and become collectors items.
Maybe Fender had this idea when making new Coronados, Dimensions and the Rascal. They all were released around the same time and then suddenly disappeared. Maybe due to poor sales, maybe due to more difficult production or taking up production time/space.
But also with the idea that the oddball stuff, no matter what profit, will add the mystique that Fender always seems to pull off.
Just like 80's Squier, old Mustang's and Coronado's and MIJ anything or anything vintage Fender. These will be another one of that type in 20 years, no doubt.

That’s a stretch. They had a fully flushed out lineup of Dimension Bass made all around the world. There was 1 Rascal bass for like 2 years.
As an instrument the Rascal bass is a joke when compared to the Dimension. A very attractive package with no substance and horrible ergonomics. I could go into more detail if anyone cares to hear it. I feel qualified to say that, I have owned both instruments at the same time.
