Every situation is different. The type of band your in... The venue you are playing... What is available to you.

I am in a loud heavy band and have to blend in nicely with 2 to 3 Marshall stacks. I use my amp as a monitor for the most part. But, I have done shows were the FOH is not so hot. I use a Hartke Kilo with a pair of AK410 cabs. If I was in a different type of band... I would probably be downsizing and matching my gear with the band and music accordingly.

From the stage up:

I put this down first to eliminate mechanical coupling issues with the stage:

Finally, I use an Audio Technica M2 IEM monitor into Westone IEM buds.

Great tone. Everything in it's place, with no unintended bleed paths. I'm happy. Sound guy is happy. Crowd is happy. All is good.

My live bass rig consist of a Carvin B600 head and, depending on the size of the venue, one or two Carvin BRX10.2 cabinets.

For P.A. support, if needed, I bring a Sennheiser e602-II mic and Radial JDI MK3 DI box.

Yes, you do need a head and cab.

While lots of people pretty much always have PA support, you should never take it for granted that you'll have it. If you do have PA support, you can turn your rig down. If you don't, and you show up without a rig, you just won't have any sound at all.

My live rig is a Mesa/Boogie D-180 through a Sunn 2000S 2x15 cab.

The 115 is darker sounding than the 810. The 410 and 810 have the same mid punch, that is more subdued in the 115.

When I was auditioning cabs, I had decided against an 810, based on size alone, but I played through the demo model when I was done, and it was VERY similar to the 410.

My wife controlled the cabs when I auditioned them. Each cab on display had an LH500 amp sitting on top, so we set the eq flat (2-10-2) and did our best to match volumes, taking into account the different number of drivers. When we were set, I turned my back, and she operated an A/B switch as I played various phrases and styles.

Going in, I was about 85% sure that I'd be walking out with a 410.

Coming out, I was carrying the 115. And the LH500!

I keep my live rig very simple. Accoustic B450 2-10 400wt combo over an accoustic ported 1-15. Digitech Drop for flat tuning. direct out pre-eq (our sound man is awesome). Done and done.
Just now in process of going Ampless in ear. Digitech drop into an Ampeg scr-DI. Xlr Out to board 1/4 out to Rolls monitor amp hardwired to Sony Dmr 7550 iem's. FOH monitor mix in Chanel 2 controlled on iPad withx32. Light and tight! Punch is what we pay our sound company for. I'm too old to lug heavy gear ;)

In my "fools-on-stools" semi-acoustic group, I go straight to the board through my pedal board which has four MXR pedals: Bass Preamp, Deluxe Chorus, Reverb and Compressor. At rehearsal I just go through a Radial J48. I use my Fodera Viceroy in that group.

In my classic rock band, I don't use any effects. My bass goes straight into a Bergantino B|Amp sitting on an HDN212. Lately I've favored my recently greened Fender American Deluxe Jazz FMT V, but also play my Sadowsky RV5 or UV70 with Pope Flex-Core preamp.

What I like about the B|Amp is that I can leave the EQ "flat" and control tone changes from the bass. The amp accurately reproduces whatever you put into it, only louder.

Big stage jobs outdoors with FOH, small jobs outside with "maybe" FOH, Pubs/Bars/Animal Clubs/private party's with "maybe" FOH, coffee shop jobs, jams, rehearsals, ect., ect., ect., one rig.....

Two Avatar 210 Neo cabinets stacked as a vertical 410 driven with a old Mesa M-6 Fathom/Carbine head.

Back-up head is a newer Mesa M-6 Carbine.....(REALLY like M-6's)

No effects.

Basses, old, old,.....old Fender Jazz.

Back-up bass, new Fender Jazz Elite.

Playing around the house, one Avatar 210 and the Mesa/Fathom with the old Jazz plugged in and the new Jazz sitting on a stand looking dejected.

Absolutely LOVE the Mesa/Avatar combination, great sound without a zillion dollar investment.....
