What's your low cost GAS?

Funny you should ask. $400 is my default GAS limit fot any bass. At that point I buy Warmoth or Mighty Mite bodies & necks and shop around for hardware and electronics. I can get <MIA value for Squier $$. But you have to be patient and bargain shop. I don't think I can ever justify spending >$400 again.
Its like buying a suit. I get excellent deals on nice suits for $70 - $100. Why pay top dollar for off- the-rack. Once you hit $300 its time to start thinking custom, which can be found online. IMHO and experience.

To maybe mock up my in-need-of-TLC Gretsch Electromatic short scale into an inexpensive 8-string. I saw one, maybe here, with an 8 string nut, some extra guitar tuners, all sharing the same original bridge, though maybe with replacement multi-grooved saddles. But that's mostly a dream idea, not sure if it'll work - but a small 8 would be really cool. I got the bass cheap, as it had a broken, but sloppily repaired headstock - might need some bridge allen screw replacements as they might be stripped on the hex heads, as none of my wrenches fit. Maybe a challenge to do, but, I'd dig it. Low budget GAS.

I've used the Talman bass at one two hour rehearsal now and there is honestly nothing not to like about it once you get used to the scale (only 20 frets) - but it sounds great, lots of tonal options if you play with the tone cuts, and the pups appear to be super loud! I am very pleased - I would not hesitate to pick up another one!

I`ve had a lot of cheapo basses. I`ve also has some very pricey basses, Gibsons mainly. For my loot the Squire Bass VI owns. You can get as bass snob as ya want and will, but even with my soon to be replaced stock pups in there, it has a heck of a tone.

For anyone who wants an easy way to fix that bridge, that megal tape, like you might use with a window AC, wrapped around the legs on the bridge make it stable.

I plan on replacing the pickups with a custom wound set, which will include a lipstick tube middle for my ocasional forays into tick tack. Might work well with the upright!

Thought I had the low cost GAS under control for a while as I'd bought 2 below the threshold week before last.
Both Retrovibes BTW,and both sweet basses.
But Monday morning saw a deal too good to miss. 84 Peavey Fury with OHSC for £100,that's roughly $150.
Rarely see Peaveys for sale in Scotland so it had to be done,5-6 hours public transport to get it.

Naha Kodiak "P" Blair. Gotta love your PV fixation.

For me, I need another like a kick in the head, but an Epiphone EB-3. First, I love the EB SG design, and watching the better reviews on YouTube, this thing really gets a wide variety of really good sounds, surprisingly varied according to player and style.
But, man, I gotta tell you, that big dude who does bass reviews on the Nevada music site just burns it up on this thing. He's a monster rock player and does a great full range review.
Short horned long scales are basically against my principles, but I would give it a shot, it just sounds and looks incredible. Plus, I "need" a Red SG I have a black one already. ;)

Well I satisfied, or actually am in the process of satisfying my low cost GAS right now... I have ordered an SX Ursa 1 in 3 tone burst with a rosewood neck...

When I first saw the current Ursa headstock I didn't like it, but as time goes by they really have grown on me, I needed a good, cheap bass to practice on during lunch breaks at work, and I didn't even want something as expensive as a Squier Affinity in case it gets stolen. I have had the shiny fancy thing of my active basses wear off on me, and I am really shooting for passives now, I have the Jazz and I wanted a P. I just admit the neck specs on the Ursa are a bit chunky, but I'm a big guy with big hands, I think I can manage just fine.

If I want to go with a real "P bass sized neck" I can always order a bound and blocked Ursa 2 neck and swap over, get the fishhook headstock too...But after going to that effort, I am back at the would care if it got stolen point again...
