What's your "White Whale"?

About 10 years ago, I owned a silver Ibanez EDA905. It was my first 5 string, and I loved the bass. For those who aren't familiar, it has a standard magnetic pickup, and 5 piezo's in the string saddles. Well, when I owned this bass, I was more or less ignorant as to how to properly setup a bass. I put thicker gauge strings on, which made the string not rest in the saddle properly, and essentially made the piezo not work. The tech I took it to couldn't figure out the problem either, and (so I thought) ruined the bass in the process of figuring it out. So I end of selling the bass, and after that, I learned how easy it would be to have "fixed" it (it wasn't actually broken).

The EDA isn't being made anymore, and I've spent 8 years trying to find one in the same color, for a reasonable price, and close to where I live, because I hate buying without playing it first. Then Monday, I walk into work (I work at GC) and lo and behold, there it is-Ibanez EDA905, in silver, bought in yesterday. After getting over my disbelief that THE bass I was looking for was looking back at me, I immediately put it on layaway until I can pay it off. I'm not letting this one get away.

This got way longer than I thought, but the question is, what are your similar stories? Anyone have a bass that got away, or just have always wanted, but can't seem to find? The EDA is not one of those basses that beats everything out there tone wise or anything, but it's just got that X-factor for me. What's yours?

I believe the prevailing sentiment on TB is "No pic, no bass." :D

This was my very first bass, bought when I was 14 from the local record store guy; much to the chagrin of my parents, who figured my obsession with bass guitar would die eventually. Heh, heh.

I traded it for a Pbass copy because I thought it sounded better. In retrospect, that was because the Pbass copy had roundwounds and the Uni Rick copy was strung with flats.

As far as I know, it's still in Yuma somewhere, and when I find it I'm making an unreasonable offer on it on the spot. I've regretted making that trade since I was 16 years old, and would love to add it or one just like it to my collection.

I have 2 Ibanez Roadstar 885 5 strings. One was my sole bass for many years, used to tour and record and play lots of gigs. Different enough to be cool, cool enough to be different, wide variety of tones, etc.

Looked around for another to make fretless, and the process took a few years. After a while, the search became partly about the quest to find one. When I finally did (which was the only one I have seen on the 'bay, before or since), it was the fulfillment of a long held desire.

My fretted one still sees playtime, in spite of my P and J basses. The fretless one, not as much. But I will keep it around as long as possible.

Would feel weird to part with it, and replacing it seems nigh impossible.

I had a Cort Action 5, translucent red paint job, beautiful figured wood, played like a dream, light as a feather, 24 fret, best neck profile I've ever played.

pickups were very weak. I had no idea back then that you could change pickups. sold it for 100 bucks. somebody has a beautiful bass.

My white whale is not really a bass that "got away" or is difficult to find. I've always wanted it but never did....until last week. Mine was a very plain white w/white pickguard jazz bass with rosewood neck. They are not expensive or limited in any way, but it has never made it into my collection. Last week I bought my 3rd Squier VM jazz bass (white) and I switched necks and pickguards with another VM. In my hands was what I had envisioned. Then I realized.....I didn't like the white pickguard after all. So I put on a parchment pickguard and it looks bad ass.

Unless he reads Talkbass (which I doubt:p) and feels like giving me a gift, I shall never aquire this bass.

The bass in question is Gene $immons' white Pedulla MVP. While I would not mind having any of his basses, this particular one has always been my favorite of his. I'm not sure if it was originally white, some of the pictures I have seen of it show some battle scars. It may have even had a dragon or his face painted on it. Does not matter, i like that bass and the MVP is my favorite Pedulla body style.

Second choice would be his black Pedulla MVP :D

edit: just read that both basses were auctioned off, So I shall never have them.
