When my buddy says "Why didn't you buy a Fender?"

'cause fender doesn't make anything like these...

20230411_130547.jpg

When I first purchased it the shipping window was July 20 to 24.
When FedEx sent me an update I was informed it'd be delivered on the 20th between 9:30 and 1:30.
I didn't want to sit downstairs in the living room waiting so I was upstairs in bed reading, waiting for the sound of the doorbell...FedEx had me waiting all day and then some in the past.
Then, at 12:35, I received this email...Hi, Joseph. We were unable to complete delivery of your package.
Funny, but I didn't hear the doorbell ring!
Well, I grabbed my keys, ran out to my car and drove to the end of the street. Could've made a left or a right...I chose right, and then at the next corner I saw a FedEx truck half a block away heading in my direction.
Good thing I hadn't made a left!
Anyway, waved to the driver who was just climbing back in the truck, asked him if he'd just stopped at my house, and...voila!
Sure would've hated to wait another day!

Sure, but I tried to explain to him that Leo Fender didn't just make Fenders.
He's one of those guys who occasionally says "Hey, I'm old school" as if that's an excuse.
How old is old school? Squiers have been around since 1982, and they’ve always been made by Fender. Actually, they were introduced as Japanese products, in part to distance their products from the Fender brand, which had suffered for a few years under CBS ownership and which now had to contend with G&L, MusicMan, Charvel, Jackson, Ibanez, Kramer, plus a bunch of cheaper knockoffs like Series A and Profile, as many people were rushing to buy their first guitar, thanks to Eddie Van Halen - who didn’t play a Fender.

41 years is a long time. It’s more time than the span between the first Fender guitar and the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, and look at everything that happened in that span. Squier’s been around longer than it hasn’t been, in terms of Fender’s lifetime.

I think he heard someone else say "I'm old school" and since then it's become his credo.
Years ago I had a Thunderbird and he said they were for metal bands.
Funny that an old school guy isn't aware of this.

My response would be that the bass do the talking. I was listening to a local band play in an outside clamshell stage. The bass clear and powerful. During the break I checked it out and found a Squire going through a POD to a nothing special amp. If you’re playing doesn’t change their mind nothing will.

I don't understand why MIM fenders exist these days, is the market just people who really want a name that starts with f on the headstock?
Well they’re half the price of an American Fender, and they’re decent. Arguably worth the price, and if you argue they’re not, well, that’s how buying and selling work. Maybe I don’t understand what you’re trying to say.

Bandmate: You really need to get yourself a real Fender PB.

Me: I already own one.

Bandmate: Then why are you playing a Squier?

Me: Because I like Fender basses.

Bandmate: But that’s a Squier.

Me: Uh-huh. Squier is a Fender brand.

Bandmate: You can’t compare a Squier to a real Fender.

Me: Why not? I think this one sounds really good in the mix.

Bandmate: That’s beside the point.

Me: How so?

Bandmate: Because…because…because…ah forget it! If you can’t tell the obvious difference between the two you need to get your head examined.

Me: Sure I can tell the difference. The decal on the headstock is completely different, see? Right here. It says Squier, S-Q-U-I-R-E, not Fender. Duh!

Bandmate stares at me blankly for a moment and then walks away.

I've ran into that problem lately, from most of the big shippers.
Driver seesthre "big, heavy" box, doesn't want to be bothered with it, marks it as he couldn't deliver/nobody home/etc., and drives on.
I've caught all of them but UPS doing this lately - my packages all go to a staffed business address - a UPS store.
When they say nobody was home/available to sign/etc., during business hours, I know immediately that they're lying

Glad you were able to catch the guy!

Yes, that's what I meant when I said words aren't really necessary...it's about tone and playability.
So how does it sound?
I'm after a new 5 string but prices are ridiculous around here.
There's one of these for $759 AUS.. or a black one with maple fretboard for $500aus...
Sounds great, even with the factory strings.
I don't know much about the stock strings, but I've heard people say they're not too good.
I'm waiting for a set of Galli flatwounds and I just know the bass is going to sound even better.
