When playing is an effortless joy.

For over 5 years I gigged a trio with my two daughters. They both play guitar, a bit of keys, play hand percussion and shakers with rock solid rhythm, and harmonise really well. For the usual sibling reasons we effectively disbanded over a year ago and have hardly played anything together since then.

I've managed to put together a pretty good band over the last year and we have a great time together and play some really good music, however, on a few songs the rhythm and groove that the guitarist and his long-time singer play just feels off and I have trouble locking in with them.

The other night my eldest came into the studio while I was running through some songs to get her acoustic guitar figuring that if she kept it in her bedroom she might pick it up a bit more often. Surprisingly she asked if I wanted to play a few tunes with her. Well, one song turned into two, then three and more.

It was just so effortless playing songs with her. Our rhythm style is just so similar and playing those songs was equal parts absolute joy and depressing. Absolute joy in that every beat and change was completely locked in together without thinking. Depressing in that I don't think I'll ever find two other musicians who are as synchronised as we three are together.

Since Sony's Singstar closed their online services we haven't done that, but coincidentally just today I was testing a new way for us to do that & will try it out this weekend.

Over the decades I found that it's very difficult trying to play with someone who has issues with time. I find playing with people who don't have those issues is a joy beyond description.

That really is the main thing. With my daughter's it's like we can feel where things move and go there together without thought..... with other people too often it feels like a challenge to keep them all on the same beat.
