The SM58's in that day met those requirements extremely well.

They still do... that's why "sound companies collectively own a metric ton of 58's" as they STILL work.. they are an industry standard like the SM57.
Doesn't make them the best, but they are solid, everyone knows how to use them, and they do the job.
