Double Bass Where do Baltimore bassists get thier work done?

I was just at Shank's before the holidays and they are very much in business (busier than ever, it sounds like). I can't recommend Mike enough. He built the extension on my bass, has repaired numerous cracks, and has tweaked my setup a dozen times to help find what is right for me. It is great to build a relationship with him...he is very loyal to his longtime customers and a great person in general. I send all of my students to him as well...never a bad experience.

Do you find the distance to be a problem at all?

I realize this may be more a direct question to Adam, but if I may, "no" driving up there is not a problem for me personally. I actually enjoy the trip! I have reliable transportation, and it's a nice ride. :D

It might take you in the neighborhood of two hours one way from B'more, depending on your local.

Some repairs can be done "while you wait", others may require you to leave your bass for a little bit...in case of the latter, don't dwell on "oh man, I gotta make TWO trips!"...instead, focus on the fact that you have two OPPORTUNITIES to try out basses and bows, hang with Mike, and meet other bassists! A lot of cool cats darken that door, let me tell ya!

Mike has always been really cool to me, and let me try any bass in the shop...even the ones I had no ability or intention to buy...just to see what they would be like.

Dig it, even if you don't "hire" Mike as your luthier, you really should oughta take a trip up thar some time! I guarantee you will be glad ya did!:D

FWIW: Check out "Branded 72" in Rockville MD for some mighty fine Texas brisket! They get some bands through too...that was the first place I ever seent Red Molly (Bluegrass)...check them out as well!:ninja:

They do Carolina style, its a great rub and its all wood smoked with mesquite wood. I get the sampler with a bit of everything. Everything is smoked for 10 hours so you know its good!

I will check out Branded 72 within the next month for sure...looks great!
