Where do you find a lead singer ?

Having a lead singer can be a great asset, when he/she projects a persona that is engaging and fun to watch.

They can focus on the crowd, drawing people in, and really get an audience behind you.

The problem is finding a lead singer that doesn't have LSD (Lead Singer's Disease). Which can be easily recognized by the "diva" attitude, and issues of overcompensating for the self-perception of being the only member of the band who does not actually play an instrument.

One common symptom is a total unwillingness to allow others any input into song lyrics.

OK, so here's my update. The band went to watch some kareoke tonight in North Charleston. The bar we went to was kind of a hole in the wall place, but one of the few that does kareoke on Saturdays. First off, there were some really hooooootttt chicks in there, sorry just had to get that out of my system lol. Two guys actually impressed us. The one that impressed us the most is actually looking for a band, but the downside is he lives an hour and a half away from us, and is stationed at shaw AFB. He says he's willing to make the trip, but were still gonna consider other options, just because thats a long trip for someone to make three nights a week, and there's always the possibility of him recieving orders to go elsewhere. The other guy was his cousin who happens to sing in a local rock band. He was willling to try us out as well because his band is not that great he says. So basically we ended up with 2 more audtioners, drank a ton of beer, and talked to some really hot chicks. All in all, a pretty fun and productive night out. We decided that kareoke bars is definatley the place to find someone. It basically saves us the trouble of wondering if they can even sing or not. Hopefully these guys will come audition, and I'll keep you posted on our progress, and were still gonna hit the local kareoke bars to keep searching until we get the right one, and meet hot chicks :hyper:

Well we don't want another Maynard, even though he is a great singer, and I'm not really sure what your talking about with the being cool enough thing. This band is not about being "cool", it's about extremely talented musicians wanting an equal part to complete the band. We have a goal, and we want to achieve that. Were not going to if we "give in" just to have someone fill the position. All the musicians in this band have played in previous popular original bands. We've all learned from our experiences and none of us are willing to sacfice any part of musicianship. We want to create great sounding music, that is equally enjoying to listen to, wiether your listening to the bass, guitars, drums, or vocals. I guess you could call this a "local supergroup", and having the musicians we have in the band has created a "buzz" so to speak in the local rock community. That would be why we've had so many auditions. Hopefully something will pan out for us soon, and we can get our show on the road. Maybe I'm interpreting you wrong, but we're not about being cool, we're just a bunch of laid back guys who love to play our instruments to our full potential. Hell I'm 33 and been playing since I was 10, cool went out the door for me when my hair started falling out and I was forced to shave my head lol.

Lots of people can pull off the shaved head look and be one awesome looking cool cat. Moby, mon! Yeah. Moby's cool. He has that whole "I'm a vegan!" thing down. I'm working on that look. Anyway, you can be cool at any age. Look at Liam Neeson!

I have only one suggestion for you. Call up Jonathan Davis and ask him to audition. Crazy enough to work.

'cept he's on tour at the moment and booked for a while.

We're having a bit of a time ourselves. Found one guy who san sing well but with no presence about him - also seems to have some sort of substance abuse and domestic problems, which we don't need. We've come across lots of others with LSD - and that was apparent BEFORE they even auditioned. Um - thanks, but no thanks. And come across others that have sung Kareoke (or at church), but never fronted a band. And yet others who were downright strange...

wow, well put,

the problem with singers is that they only have one voice, I know that may sound stupid but think of it this way, if you were in a beatles tribute group you would want a rick or a hofner or something like what Paul played, if you were in a jazz band, you would want a jazz bass, So bassically, depending on what style we (being instrumentalists) are playing, we can switch instruments, vocalists can not rip out their larynx's and replace them with one "bassed of Robert Plant's"

If all else fails, you could get someone from the Pasadena area to give you Eddie Van Helen's number.. his band is always firing lead singers.. you could hire one he didn't want any longer.

We do have a local classifeds section in 2 papers as well as 3 online forums for musicians looking for other musicians, but I don't think many people know about those. For instance, I put an add up for myself on those and didn't get a single reply for about 3 weeks from them, but the same day I did that, I went down to guitar center and posted something on their bulletin board and got 4 calls that day. Unfortunatley all of those bands were "beginners" so to speak, and while they were humerous, they were a waste of time for anyone who takes their seriously. And what really sucks is that the live music scene here is awesome in Charleston! This town really supports live music of all genre's, and most of the bands here all play emo or punk, so when a heavier band like ourselves play out, lots of people flock to the shows. We just had 2 bands signed to national record labels, Souls Harbour, and Number One Contender. Both of these bands are very talented, and are helping the hard rock scene out down here get a lot of attention, so we want to take full advantage of it of course. We just need a dang singer to do it lol.

Well I thought I would just give yall an update on our progress. We weren't having any luck with the kareoke bar singer hunting, and things were really getting depressing at practice. So basically I just came into practice, turned on the mic, told the guys I wrote some lyrics for one of our songs, now lets do this. Turns out I actually did great on the song, and it was like a fresh breath of air for all of us. In 3 days worth of practicing with me singing we were able to complete 3 original songs, which is great considering one was brand new and we had never tried playing it before. So obviously the guys put the job of lead singer on my shoulder now. I have no problem doing it, but I just gotta get used to playing and singing at the same time again because it's been so long since I have done it. Anyways, thanks for all the advice guys and wish me luck lol. Maybe soon I'll have some recordings for yall to listen to and bash apart!
