I dont really know where to get strings. I have used Lemur and the string emporium in the past but is there other places I could/should look too? Im looking to start using more gut >

I find lots of stuff -even more for bass guitar- at lordofthestrings.com - they are in Holland, so it would be much more useful for me in Italy than for you in the States, but their prices are great.

I actually live in the Twin Cities, so I can pick them up right from their shop, but they sell strings online to people all over the country. Their prices are great, and they have a huge selection to choose from.
The classifieds here on Talkbass are a great place to score gut strings...provided you have the patience to wait for them to come up for sale.
That said- You will get great service from either Dan Larson at Gamut or Damian Dlugolecki.

TB Classifieds, and my luthier's shop. In the past his prices have been within spitting distance of online dealers, I get to "buy local" and see some nice basses. My needs are pretty mainstream.
I have to give a plug in to Fretwell, too...some of the nicest people on the planet, with great service and an excellent selection of old Kay basses, if you like that sort of thing.
I've found the string emporium to have way cheaper prices than anywhere else I've seen including quinn. I know their spirocores are at least 15$ cheaper than anywhere else last time I checked.
Depends on what I'm buying and why.

Quinn Violins if I need some specific thing, like a Orig Flat Chrome G string (in my near future)
And...our classifieds. It's cost/saved me a ton of money over the years and allowed me to try a lot of things...or my sponsor would say "enabled me".
