Where do you like your thumb rest ??

I have just bought a thumb rest for my MIM Precision but dont quite know where to fix it, I play fingers only and tend to move around a bit for tonal variety so would not want it getting in the way .
Where do you like yours to be, do you have a favourite location ?
I did wonder about sellotaping it to the bass and moving it around until I find where I like it then drill as required .

For me it's near the neck like on 70s fenders. I use the pickup as a thumb rest anywhere else, but I have no where comfortable to put my thumb near the neck.

I'd give it the doublesided tape treatment and figure out where you like it. I put mine in the stock '62 placement as a tug bar, and really it's just a decoration at that point, and not functional at all. After playing my Precision for a bit (it's my first P) I realized that I should have made it functional and put it up top instead.

I Have a 70's Fender where the thumb rest is on the top. I use it all the time. The point of the 60's thumb rest on the bottom was there were still players plucking with their thumbs. Don't see too many playing like that today.

+1 however I still anchor on the pickup when the need arises

When I went from a Jazz bass to a Musicman SUB it forced me to learn the floating thumb technique
and has opened up more options tonally just by finger placement
Now it feels almost natural to move my hand anywhere on the bass to change up the sound.
This is especially handy when playing a fretless

I do think that before you install one, you should think carefully about whether you really need it. If you move your hand around to various locations, perhaps a fixed thumbrest isn't for you in the first place. Though they can look cool. Another downside: once you've got it on there, you can't take it off without leaving nasty holes.

I stopped using them long ago. I learned to just manage my fingers without a rest.

Good answers, I do use the floating thumb technique all the time but its when I play the E string I wondered about the rest, at the moment I let my hand hang down and go from there, it works ok but I wondered if the rest would give me an advantage

I have really wanted to do this myself... just I don't like the aesthetics of it. I wish there was a less obvious bridge I could place on the top of the pickups that perhaps would just clip on, leaving no holes or requiring any modification.
