Where do you stand?

In the middle mostly. Maybe slightly to the right/left of the drums depending on stages. Our singer plays keyboard, synth, sax, and guitar so he is on the side with his gear. Easy to see him give a signal now and then when we jam out on something.

I know the drummer very well. But we’re playing a new song or three almost every time we get together (usually one or zero run-throughs), or else one that we haven’t played for a year. If I *see* in his knee or ankle that he’s decided to go for an offbeat of 4 or 2, I can do it with him and I won’t behind the beat at all.

i guess it makes sense if your improvising (or your drummer us and you want to stay with him) during performances. Makes sense in the right genre.

I play in my church praise band. It has gone through several iterations, BL, guitarists, drummers etc, over the years. I have played on the left, or in front, simply because the drums are in the corner of a small stage and other members had a preference, or needed a certain spot for their gear. In it's current configuration, I play to the left of the drums. I don't really have a preference, and have not noticed any difference.

I've been on both sides of the drummer and dead center, but I usually prefer to stand to the drummer's right. It feels more natural, maybe because I can see the fretboard while I'm scanning the stage. No big deal though, as I've played several gigs to the drummer's left and it's been fine. In fact, those have been some of my best gigs.

In my last band, the leader/songwriter/vocalist/rhythm guitarist didn't want to take center stage, so that was my position unless something like a supplied bass rig forced me elsewhere. I thought it was strange, but it worked well because it placed me next to our lead guitarist and allowed me to connect better with his playing.

Seemed like every gig needed something like this:

Depends on the gig for me!
If I’m playing Funk/Soul/Rick gig I set up on Drummer’s left side.

If I’m playing Jazz I’m on his Ride side which is drummers right side.

When drummer plays his Hihat most of the night,he’s head is naturally towards left, and when playing Ride Cymbal he’s head is natrualy towards right.
If the drummers playing hihat all night long and your on his right side he’s gonna have neck ache looking at you after da gig!lol
