Where in the chain do you like your hpf?

Where in the signal path do you guys tend to put your high pass filter?

I've seen people put them first and other put them last before the amp (which makes ghe most sense to me).

Im not overly picky about where it goes myself, though I do tend to make sure it comes after compression.
Sometimes I like it before other fx to remove some rumble before it goes in.

I've always wanted it after the compressor though. Otherwise I find the compression just winds up boosting the lows back in with the settings I tend to use.

In the past I've used multiple hpf's and multiple compressors. Doing so let's you layer on fx I'm a way you couldn't really get away with otherwise.

Until recently, I had a Broughton HPF/LPF at the front. My compressor does not have an HPF sidechain, so cutting the lowest end helps prevent it from being over triggered (I like my board to be a safe space for compressors ). The Broughton is still there, and I now have another at the end in the form of a Genzler Magellan preamp, and they work really well together. The total 30 dB/octave rolloff for the frequencies they’re both covering means that I can set them both lower than either alone, usally ~60 Hz for the Broughton and ~45 Hz for the Genzler.

Doesn't that depend on what's in your chain? If you have, for example an octaver in your chain, putting an HPF in front of it often improves the tracking I noticed. Depending on what else you have, you may need another one at the end, true.

tbph, I don't use an octaver. I play bass, not synth. Well, actually keys was my first instrument, but if I wanted the sound of an octaver, I'd never have picked up a bass guitar, in the first place.

I like digital effects so I can do both. I like a HPF pre-synth/Octaver so the subs don't mess up the tracking. I also like a HPF at the end of the chain so that FOH doesn't have to deal with excess crumblies.

When I have chicken fingers, I prefer the good kind with the big crumblies.

When I use an HPF, I prefer to put it at the end of my chain, right before the DI. However, I've been considering experimenting with it at the front of the chain, right after my tuner.

Same here, in the middle of the chain, before my comp, but after octavers and synth effects.

first, right before comp, so the sub lows aren’t triggering the comp constantly.

I tried it in both positions, and it works best for me before the comp. The lows hit harder without getting muddy and its tighter and more focused than it was when running it after the comp.
I don't use modulation pedals much anymore, but it seems like I remember running HPF before them as well. Less mud in equals less mud out.

Depends on what's in your chain.

If you have some sort of effect or combination of effects that causes unwanted subharmonics, at the end of the chain will fix it.

Otherwise, unless you specifically have that issue, i'd put it at the front. In the front of the chain so you have no unwanted sub frequencies going into any of your processors and effects. You don't want those unwanted sub frequencies triggering the compressor or being processed through something that adds harmonic content. You're basically "cleaning up" the signal first, then sending the clean signal to your processors, effects, and amp.

I put mine second to last. I would make it last but the way I have it mounted, last would be difficult. So I put it second to last right before my Quad Cortex. I want to redo my board though and I'll more than likely put it last soon.

At the end. Cuts out all the unwanted freq to the amp.
I also put my compressor near the end before the HPF so that my pedals are acting naturally to my dynamics.
As in all pedal boards.... this just works for me lol

I have a Broughton always on HPF tucked away under my board.

I put mine first to clean up the signal first. Nothing on my board would add frequencies that aren't there, and I have more headroom available for the pedals I have. That's my lay person logic.
