Double Bass Where to get fresh rosin?

Hello everybody,

my teacher sometimes lets me use her rosin if I forget taking my own to the lesson. The chunk of rosin my teacher uses (Kolstein soft) is soft and easy to apply, whereas mine (of the same brand, bought later than hers) is rock hard compared to hers.

When I asked the same shop my teacher uses, for soft rosin, the man behind the counter asked me, "Soft rosin, huh? Never saw one." But I know that for example the Pops packet reads, "is necessarily soft and will run when left in a tilted position. I am sure the specimens sold in these shops would not run even left upside down for a week.

This little Scandinavian capital city has four music shops selling string instrument accessories. This week, I visited all of them and asked to try the rosins they have available. All of the rosins - Pops, Kolstein, Pirastro and some fourth make - were the same as mine, more like once-melted sugar than the soft nice substance my teacher has.

I told this to my teacher, and she said that if even the shop which she uses doesn't have fresh rosin any more, she can't help me and will herself be in trouble when her packet runs out.

So, where could I find the kind of rosin I'm looking for? Is there a Internet dealer willing to ship to this European backcountry, or a European rosin maker I could ask firsthand?

Yours,

Maksim

Why would pops ruin a bass?

it wont. everyone uses the stuff.. rosin wont ruin your bass. wipe it off it theres excess getting on the wood..

you may have kolsteins "all weather" rather than soft- IIRC the packages are almost identical. i live 10 minutes away from kolsteins, if shipping isin't outrages i can pick up however much you want from kolsteins and send it your way.. i'd immagine the freshest stuff is what he has in the shop, right?

or they may be able to ship straight to you?

theres got to be websites that carry lots of the gooey stuff that will ship to you.

One of the biggest challenges of using rosin is knowing when to throw it away. As bassrosin.com points out, it's rare that an entire cake of rosin gets used before its freshness has passed.

Someone, sometime, will have the clever idea of setting up a "rosin subscription service." Players will specify their preferred brand and degree of usage, and absolutely fresh tubs with show up at the appropriate intervals.
