Double Bass where to pick up a 5th string extension cheaply

Hey I was wondering were one can get a fifth string extension cheaply, that will not break my uprigh bass neck. without hiring the luthier to make one for me, which are very expensive.

So, this would be a low-B string with an extension down to G below the piano keyboard?? I don't think something like that exists.

But, if you are talking about a regular extension to take a low-E down to low-C you can order one from Gollihur or Upton or Lemur for roughly $50.

The really cheapest way is to call someone from your local symphony and ask if you can have an old string. When you get it home, give it a deep cleaning by soaking it in methyl hydrate or rubbing alcohol for a couple of minutes, rub the goop out of it with a cloth and string it up.

Are you talking about the string or an actual extension?

There is no such thing as a cheap extension. It has to be custom made to your bass. It's not expensive because it's a ripoff, it's expensive because it's labor intensive. Anyone who can make one work right that won't "break your bass" won't be cheap.

We often joke in the section about putting an extension on my low B string to get the G. I'm thinking it might disrupt ELF (exteme low frequency) communications with submarines in the Atlantic.

What exactly do you mean? Most extensions are on four string basses, lengthening the fourth string to a C. Are you talking about adding a string? Then you mean a five-string conversion. Either way, there is no cheap solution.

Well, it only goes down to A, but as yet Pirastro doesn't see a market for extra long B-V's!
