Which 5 er

Hello everyone I 'am still have the G.A.S for a mid level 5(UNDER A $1000.00 BUCKS) string and there are a few that I'am looking at that I have not played.
First how are the Spectors ? Repbop,Legends ect...
Laklands skylines and the G&L tributes
How do these sound compared to my fender jazz,p-bass and warwick corvette that I have now
My local music stores do not carry these so I would have to order one to try out,but before I do that I woul like to ask fellow players there thoughts on these basses.

Thanks Eno

I have an Ibanez SR505 and I love it.

I've been looking into a Musicman Stingray 5, they get amazing reviews and used are under a G.

I can't tell you about how Spectors sound I've never played or heard much of em..

There are tons of good 5ers in that price range -- especially if you buy used.

I have owned a few that you mentioned and a few others as well (see profile -- most of the basses listed were purchased for under $1k). They're all different and each has its own redeeming qualities. It's really just a matter of personal preference.

What exactly are you looking for?

Well I realy dont know,to tell the truth,I'am wanting to move up to a five but want something different from the jazz or p-bass sound ,the basses I have are passive so I think an active would be nice to try out ,soapbars on the skylines and not sure on the spectors emgs( that is a nice looking rebop)
My style of playing is blues/rock( not heavy metal) and I'am not into slapping or tapping,I play with fingers only and i like a bass that is punchy in the low and midrange and not real bright or brittle sounding, I would say old school but not to old(LOL) But I;am thinking with active electronics you can tweek your sound pretty much the way you want to a point but where is the point that seperates the tone of the bass and the electroincs.

Not sure this is as good in terms of sound as the Trib L2000 review by Ed Friedland on youtube, but it does give you a taste of the sound of the Trib L2500.

He does make a mistake in the review when he states that the bass and treble tone controls work when the preamp is turned on. They work in passive mode too and are cut only.

Most agree that the G&L's can be set to sound something like a Jazz or a P, but they really have their own sound. Love mine.

I have an USATK Ibanez 5er... not really a 5 guy, fact it's the only one I own, but it's got a great sound - not the "MM" killer you might hear people say, but it's flexible and my drummer says it's his favorite out of my horde... not sure what the current ones are like... but might be worth a look if you want something other than the P/Jazz sound. I have a Carvin 6 that I like... should be able to get a used 5 for under a K...

Sounds like maybe a P-bass to me. Active adds boost or cut to specific frequencies and allows many players young and old alike the option of making their bass sound really bad. Find something that sounds right for you set relatively flat. Maybe the MM with the treble rolled off a tad would work. Too many choices to say here.

Sounds like you might want something with a humbucker in it. H/H, S/H, P/H are all good combinations. I find that a bridge humbucker adds a bit more character to the sound than a bridge single coil. A 55-02, L2500 or a Spector ;) should fit that bill nicely.

Since you seem to have the money in the budget for it, I would go wih a 55-02 over the 55-01. The 55-01 is a great platform for modding but the stock electronics are a bit lackluster. Also, a used US G&L is in your price range and would only cost a little bit more than a new Tribute.

Happy hunting :bassist:

One more thing: the soapbar style is just a casing -- they can put any type of pickup in there. Check the EMG or Bartollini website for more info.
