There's so little creativity among bassists these days. Let's move away from Leo Fender designs for a second.

For $1,000, I'd see what Tom Clement can do for you. Or a used Carvin. Or, if you're lucky, a used Spector Euro 5.
 
I think a great 5-String bass for the money is a mid-price range ibanez.

I personally own a Ibanez SR755 5-String and it is just great. The Bartolini pickups sound great with a lot of punch and the neck is thin and smooth playing.
