Which acoustic? Ibanez or Beaver Creek

I have been searching the forums for a while trying to figure out what acoustic bass to get in a low price range. I only want it to practice at home, as to not upset the wife as I usually have it cranked to play, and if I do play live I will be amped.

I've narrowed it down to the Ibanez AEB8E that I can get for 337$ from LAmusic in Toronto ( free shipping) [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

OR

I can get a Beaver Creek BCB05 locally for 399$ and that includes a gig bag [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]


Thoughts on this?

I just sold my street bike so I can finally go pick one up.

I just bought an Ibanez AEB45 an older discontinued model. While i was searching and looking for reviews on it (few) i found allot of favorable reviews on Ibanez ABG series. They are know for the money to be one of the loudest acoustically and a decent plugged in tone.

Wow! That Beaver Creek sure is shiny! At first, I thought you were talking about Boulder Creek; more $$.

I'd say go play the BC (Beaver, not Boulder) and see how it feels. If you can have someone else play it, you can get an idea of its projection and tone while listening from a distance. Also keep in mind that it'll probably be strung with bronze rounds. For many players, they're not the favored strings for ABG's, as they call attention to fret buzz and finger noise.

If you're not anti ebay, check out the Takamine EG510, it's in your $$ range. I've had one for a number of years. Well built, good tone, and enough acoustic volume to accompany one or two guitars. Although it might still be too loud for the wife.

Well I am working all day tomorrow and have an appointment after that so I won't make it to any stores. My brother-in-law is gonna go check out the Beaver Creek ( he plays too). He also knows of a few other places that sometimes have hidden gems. he has dealt with a few stores and usually gets a pretty good deal so why not use it to my advantage.

I am totally unfamiliar with the Beaver Creek bass, although I'll have to say it is an impressive looking instrument. I have played the Ibanez, and found it to be a very solidly built bass (at least for an acoustic bass) and the sound was really good. It does have a built in tuner that would be a definite plus. be sure to factor in the price of a hardshell case with these. Acoustic instruments and gigbags are not usually a good combination. One of those soundhole plugs would help with eliminating feedback in louder plugged in gigs.

My brother-in-law is going to try and get a cash deal going and trade the gig bag for a hard case. If not I will be looking at getting a hard case. I have never believed in gig bags. Saying that I need another hard case for my Samick 4-string as it only came with a gig bag but is also a few years old. ( traded car audio for the bass a few weeks ago)

I'd get the Beaver Creek because it's more unusual and aesthetically appealing. At the price range, anything's going to be competent, but very few are going to be really nice. That's fine, nothing wrong with competent! (I count a Brice and a Jay Turser in my bass collection and love 'em!).

I'd also favor the Beaver Creek, because in some land that has been in my family for 150 years there is a creek that was dammed up by Beavers. A real Beaver Creek. Turned forest/farmland into wetlands.

If you are open to other options, see if you can find a Dean Performer.

Just called LA Music and the beaver creek they sell is without gig bag, but I would want a hard case anyhow. So the one local is a better deal since I do get a gig bag with it. Might be worth waiting the few weeks till they get another one in stock. OR order either one of the 2 basses from La Music.

So much for trying to keep things simple.

Well acoustic buying is now on hold. I recently ( last couple of weeks) took a liking to the semi-hollow and hollow body bass style and I came across this http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=641613 . I think it will be more practical for me to get this one. I think it might be just loud enough so I can practice stuff while watching tv and not disturb anyone, even myself but yet still be able to hear it non-amped. PLUS I can actually see using this one live, whereas an acoustic is less usable in the music I play.

I just came across this thread. I know it was a couple of years ago that it was posted, but hey...you never know who will be looking for advise. I bought one of the Beaver Creek model 101 dreadnoughts and have found it to be a great little guitar to play. I also have Gibson, Yamaha, and Alvarez acoustics, and a K. Yairi twelve string. The action is good, the tone is deep and the sound is projected well. The machine heads are not the best on the market, but I have not experienced any slipping and the guitar retains it's tuning very well. It's a great looking guitar (mine is the white enamel model) and despite the amount I move it around -- I take it camping with me and into camp when I'm working in the oil patch -- the finish has retained it's luster very well and in the last couple of years has only obtained a couple of minor scratches so it's pretty durable. For the price, a little over $200 to $250, it is a very affordable and relatively high quality instrument. Of course try it before you purchase it, but I feel you can't go wrong with purcasing one and in addition, I believe it's Canadian made eh!
