Yep. You mostly see him with SVT and 810's. He went from many years as a Fender Precision player to playing a Lakland P bass. . . . and I didn't notice his sound changing too much.

IMO this why we shouldn't get too hung up on the gear our "heroes" use. We won't sound like them, even with the same gear, we'll still sound like US. So make George's licks your own, but sound like you.

I'd vote for Aguilar. I've owned a TH500 for about 8 years (it's never missed a beat) and also use an AG700. These amps can get everything from a great P bass sound to a modern Jazz bass sound.

It's been a few years, but yeah, last time I saw him at the Warren Haynes Xmas Jam he was playing thru the big Aguilar tube amp, with his Lakland bass. Maybe he'd use the TH-350 for practice. ;)

On another note, I went to a festival in 2007 in Ft Lauderdale, forget what band GPJr was playing in at the time, but the airline had misplaced his Fender P Bass and he had to borrow someone's. Maybe that's when he got with Lakland.

Thanks for your input. And I know I'll never sound like him but I'd rather sound like me closer to his tone then me closer to someone elses, if that makes sense.

ampeg b15 all day. aguilar didn't exist back then. great record btw, big dr john fan as well. aguilar i find is very mid forward "spanky" type of tone (owned DB359, GS cabs, played DB750 as backline many times), ampeg is thick phat and wooly. they are very different. george's "modern" tone is not my cup of tea. but i love his tone pre-1980

My Agular experience is that they are a quality manufacturer and they stand behind their products. As for feeling underpowered, at least with the TH500 I believe the head's voicing as well as gain staging available for clean headroom can tend to make it feel weak in the clean volume and overall volume areas. With a Berg CN212 (4 Ohm) my TH500 gets plenty loud.

IME GK voicing tends to make their heads feel louder than their rating. Additionally, GK heads typically have seemed to punch above their weight class power/volume-wise.

Thanks for your input. Does the whole GK is just a modern sounding amp trope stand true? Or are they capable of a throaty vintage tone as well, in your opinion/experience?

Could be worth trying the ampeg first then eh, since they are cheaper and the resale hit will be minimal.

He'd prolly use the one given to him at least cost by the company from which he received the most benefit.


Edit-and yeah, still grooove smoooove like a mofo and sound like himself :-)
