I confirmed a suspicion I had about his sound by asking a question on his live stream this week. I asked how often he changes strings. He plays roundwounds and only changes them one at a time when he breaks a string. So basically never. I've been playing on ancient rounds on my P and had a feeling he did too.

Do you think he used flatwounds back in the day too? I also love destively bonnaroo, such a great sound and classic new orleans vibe of toussaint/meters/dr john. Such a shame it didn't sell well at the time, travesty if you ask me

I'd put money on it. He precedes the widespread use of rounds by many years.

I'm guessing flats too... His playing on "Souther Nights" sounds like a P with flats to me - that was mid-70s.

Yes, got to see him once about five years back in England. Glad I did as it would have been my last chance.

At the moment I’m constantly changing the strings on my bass between flats and rounds, just can’t decide which I prefer. I think the meters kind of sound is what swings it for me.
