Which Ampeg cabinet to get...?

My current rig is an Ampeg SVT-CL to an Ampeg 410HLF and I'm interested in some insights as to what additional cabinet I should get.

My choices are: 115E, 410E or another 410HLF.

All of the above are Ampegs btw, I've gotta keep up appearances obviously!

115E and 410E are both 8 ohm cabs and will not work with a SVT-CL that is already operating at 4 ohms due to the 410HLF you already have. You would have to get another 410HLF (for appearances.....) and move the SVT's ohm selection switch to 2 ohms. Just sell your 410HLF and get the king, the Ampeg 810E. That would round out your appearance nicely. :smug:

Aside from the fact that it sounds amazing, I'd also find it a lot easier to move around one large cab, rather than two mid--sized cabs.

On that note, the 610 would also be a good choice. Making liberal use of the skid rails on the back, I was able to move it in and out of my house and 4-door Sunfire no problem.

I am in the same boat. I own the HLF and a SVT-VR. Last night I was on ampeg's site getting the dimensions and then I got the measuring tape out and measured my cars cargo space (it fits) and i was just trying to figure out if i could deal with it. The 8x10 will sound better and is only 18 inches taller than the HLF.

18 inches.

But if this is still not an option for you, sell the HLF and get two 410e cabs.

Just get the 8x10 or a 4x12. for live purposes I would only run 1 type of speaker. Either 10's, 12's or 15's. If you get mic'd live or mic'd and D.I. then they arent going to mic your whole rig...ie: 1x15 and 4x10. So i see no gain in having the odd speakers just for your ears only. It might sound incredible but no one but you is going to hear it.
That being said I run through a 15/410 enclosure myself. but its all in one cab. I also bought it before I became so cranky about this particular topic. Otherwise I would have bought a 8x10 again or 4x12.

Sounds like you are looking to add to your rig, in which case, I would agree with the others, just get an 810 cab and sell the SVT410HLF.

Another option is to look for a smaller more portable cab for smaller gigs and use one or the other. That is what I did and now I have a SVT410HLF and a BXT210M cab. Just something to consider...

When i saw Umphrey's McGee over the summer it sure looked like their bassist Ryan Stasik was running a 410HE and 410HLF with his SVT-VR. It certainly looked like it to me anyway. Here is a pick.

At this angle its hard to tell, but when i was there i was pretty sure the bottom cab was the HLF and the top cab is shorter than the bottom. Not really sure how that would work though.

I would say if you really want to add another cab i would suggest what everyone else seems to be saying and sell the hlf and get an 810e

AND sound totally different! I say stick with the HLFs if you like how deep they go ... The sealed 810s move air but are more designed to do mids that cut through the mix ... Cheers.

That is a HE on a HLF, this would work as it is a 2.67 Ohm load and the VR goes down to 2 Ohms. The HE (high end) can only go down to 60 Hz (-3 dB) so stacking one one top of another is a horrible idea. I don't get why people think that saying something that is wrong often enough makes it right. Try a fridge if you like the sound do it, if you prefer the HLF (high-low frequencies) get another. Stay away from the 610HLF it is a complete piece of crap and doesn't do what either the 410HLF or 810E do well, I think Ampeg wanted to get the best of both worlds, but IMHO that cab is the worst of both worlds. Cheers guys, I'll probably just get another HLF.

This is because getting rid of my existing HLF ain't an option because a) I love it too much and b) I'm rocking up to practice with a fridge.

Also I do like the all-round sound of it, plus the ventilation system and the tweeters are also a great feature of the HLF.

How about this can of worms though? A HLF and a fridge? Possible? And if so, how would it go?
