Which Ampeg PRO?

I've owned and gigged with a '74 SVT from 1981 until about 1991. I love an all tube head, but I won't haul 90 pounds around. I've been using an SVT-4Pro for the last 12 years. It's a great compromise between tone and weight. I also just got an Ampeg SVT-7Pro and really like it. No mistaking the Ampeg tone and for 15 pounds it sounds terrific and is priced right. The preamp in the 4Pro is a bit more flexible and it weighs 26 pounds more than the 7Pro, but the 7Pro sounds great and has enough power for most anyone.

I heard the 7 pro, while rated higher, doesn't actually get as loud as the 4pro.

on a side not, my buddy just offered me his 4pro so he can upgrade to classic. Any advice on buying an ampeg used?

For what it's worth, the only svt's I like are the classic and the 4 - both for different reasons.

SVT-6Pro - It's a monster.

Heavy tho, so if that's an issue, then try something else.

i use an svt 3 pro with my avatar 2x12 and couldnt be more happier best tone ive gotten to date. great amp well made and the price on the used scene is great.

SVT2 Pro. No doubt. The only thing you will need. Unless you want another!

2 PRO - Like the Classic but with more clarity, growl, and control over the tone. Not a lot of clean headroom - if you want a loud clean tone, the 4 PRO is the better choice.

3 PRO - sounds like the 2 PRO in quieter/cleaner settings, has some tube growl. Somewhat of a pain to dial in the tone you want

4 PRO - Lots of low end, ok clarity, really clean and warm sounding. No tube amp growl. Power sections - I suggest running everything in bridged mono, with a 8ohm or 4 ohm load. Plenty of power this way.

5 PRO - simple clean channel, wicked distortion channel. Decent head overall, but somewhat limited

I don't have experience with the others.

When I was amp-shopping, I found thact the 3-pro had a great tone, easy to dial in. The 4-pro I had to play with for a long time to get a good tone out of. I then got a great deal on a new 2-pro and coldn't be happier. But I kind of want to get a smaller, lighter, more transportable 2nd amp.
