Which bass for a power trio?

With all of the extensive EQ on modern amps and various effect pedals, to me this is more important to work on rather than what bass.

The 'power trio' originally was Cream and Hendrix and each had a different approach but both were limited to basically 'big guitar amps' for bass.

I love the fat EB sound for bands like Cream and Free and especially Mountain but now with very clean headroom amps with extensive EQ, a lot has changed.

I would try all of them.

I think you should take the best bass you have. I'm guessing you don't have a 90's rig, so take the bass that sounds like you and forget about being "period correct".

Regardless of the "90s pop/punk" umbrella I think the songs of that era are different enough to justify all three basses. A P/J with Low Rider strings, steel would have perhaps been the most flexible option but the Ray won't sound wrong anywhere. IMHO

The OP asked for 90’s-2000 era pop rock pop punk power trio. My first thought was Flea....Red Hot Chili Peppers = Black Stingray .
That my answer and I’m sticking to it. I didn’t see too many Sunburst Pbass with tort during that time .

I prefer not to try to add frequencies with the amp's eq a bass doesn't have. Without hearing your J and P I have to generalize and say the Ray. You're not sitting perfectly in the mix you are the mix. You have sonic real estate to fill, so the Ray. You can always subtract eq.

It is going to be how you all play. The Greg Lake pic is not on the money. Emerson filled the space by himself. Listen to Live at Leeds. Moon and Townsend allowed for Ox's trebly albeit glorious grind. So how all your mates play even if you're doing covers has an effect. Yes on the grit/grind/drive/distortion pedal. We had tube amps. The harmonic color is necessary.
