Me again—I know I'm all over the place, but that's what research is about, right? Also, count yourself lucky this isn't yet another thread about flat wounds where 3/4 of the responses are "TI Jazz flats" and the other quarter is "TI Jazz flats feel like spaghetti."

Anyway,

I've come to a few conclusions over the weeks I've been researching new strings for my bass:
  • The initial brightness of nickel rounds is what drew me to look into ground and roller wounds, but after the initial brightness died, nickel rounds actually sound decent;
  • There is some truth to the idea that you can remove what's there, but you can't add what isn't—i.e. you can get nickel rounds to approximate flat or warmer tones by reducing the tone and treble controls and/or palm muting, but you can't make flats sound like rounds.
I was about to just reorder the same strings I've been using, but with everything that's been happening in the world these past few months, I've become more conscious about where I'm spending my money.

In my ongoing research, I've contacted six manufacturers. One didn't respond, one was downright arrogant, two offered great service and two went above and beyond. D'Addario is one that went above and beyond. On top of that, they have a foundation, a string-recycling program and a reward program. What's not to like?

So, I want to give D'Addario rounds a try, but I'm not sure which set to try: The XL, the NYXL or the XT. Based on their "Tone Scale," I think I'd prefer the XL and XT, but I've never tried coated strings. The reviews I've read about the XT don't seem too favourable, though it seems like a lot of people were comparing them to Elixir strings, which others said wasn't exactly accurate. On the other hand, the NYXL seem to get a lot of praise, and they're currently on sale for the same price as the XL.

I mainly play pop, R&B/neo-soul, funk and follow along jazz method books. I've tried D'Addario String Finder, but I always get "Half Rounds."

I’ve had a set of the light gauge (40-95) XLs nickel rounds on my Tobias for a couple of years. Sounds great. Just enough higher-end sparkle to sound good when slapped or chording, but plenty of warmth when I want a more “pure” finger style tone. I generally do not re-EQ when switching between playing styles.

Are they a coated string? The packaging does not indicate that they are, and they don’t feel like it. FWIW, I’ve played Elixirs in the past and the XL feels nothing like that.

Sorry meant to say XT, not XL.

I have been using D'Addario nickel XL's for a little while now (EXL170-5) and they are good reliable strings. I would probably like more zing when they are new, but I prefer the feel of nickel over stainless steel.

I also tried a set of NYXL's, which is currently on one of my basses and they're good too. It's hard to say the difference, because you're not evaluating them back-to-back new out of the package sets, but my impression was the NYXL's were a little mid scooped whereas the regular XL's had a bit more low mids.

I was previously using DR Lowriders and they were good, but I wanted to try strings that I can get anywhere and at a decent price. D'Addario and Ernie Ball Slinkies are generally the two main strings you'll find in any physical music store in North America.

Just chiming in to say that the Sunbeams on my headless, after a month of constant playing, warmed up to a perfect sound….I just needed to wait for them to mellow to be extremely happy. I would say you’re on the right track.

XL’s work on nearly everything. Can’t go wrong.

I play the demos for fatbasstone.com and we’ve always used the NYXL strings. I hadn’t tried them before that. I would definitely recommend those. I think they’re steel? Whatever they are they feel and sound great

Sorry, but I'm confused on your last paragraph. Are you recommending the Sunbeams, or the NYXL?

After years of trying everything from T-I's to Black DEiamonds, one universal truth emerged: They all go dead too damn fast.

So my days of high dollar strings has long since passed. I use a lot of D'Ad XL's, as their tone for me is 3 Bears' Just Right: Not as clangy as stainless, and better tone than pressure wounds or God Forbid, flats or tape wounds. And somebody always has them on special, so the buy-in is relatively cheap and I can change them more often rather than nursing some $75 set like a heart patient to get them to last . . . . cause they just don't. I keep tone longer by changing less expensive strings more often.

XL's for JW, please.

I've been following his string journey…he can't use sunbeams on his short scale 6….but I was mentioning them because rounds will definitely mellow and can work for someone who is used to flats.

Concerning the D'Addarios…both the XL and the NYXL strings work for most basses. Super solid and reliable strings

You do a fine job on those demos, nice work.

Thank you for following 😂 You know, I'm starting to think rounds are not that bad after all. But I'll be making a deposit soon to have a luthier build me a vintage-inspired Mustang with a modern neck and "meatier" pick up that I plan to string with… well, I can't make up my mind on that either, but definitely D'Addario Tapes or La Bella DTF. Or maybe Chromes for the above reasons.

I know you're a fan of Martin Keith - I've seen your posts and watched your videos on Instagram - and I really wanted him to build my next bass. I've discussed specs with him. But I'm in Canada. The CAD is so low right now, and the ongoing trade war could very well make the price of the bass go up by 25% overnight. I feel bad for Americans that have F basses in the work. Imagine a 25% increase on a $8,000+ bass…
