Which do you prefer?

Black guard, no contest. The other one is awful.

That said, I would make a single-ply black clearcoated Bakelite guard for that bass, myself – not the B/W/B.

My second choice would be single-ply white.

Not much other than those would work for me on that bass. Tort would be okay, but definitely not better than single ply black or white.

The thing is, the Ray’s got this really deliberate vintage pop art vibe going for it, what with its quirky rounded geometry and boldly simple color schemes, and I think just about any pattern or texture at all puts a very abrupt and tragic end to that whole motif.

I give the patterned steel points for creativity and self expression, but you might as well be putting truck balls on a Beetle. It’s pretty much the same concept.
