Which effect pedal do I need? (NEW TO EFFECTS)

Do NOT get a Sushi Box FX pedal, they are too addictive and if you get one you will keep buying them till you are broke or you break your back carrying them all. Yes they are that good.

I also suggest a Zoom pedal. I recommend the ms60b+.
The reason why I recommend Zoom is because you get MANY different effects to choose from, in a very small package, at a very low cost. Chances are that you will find some of them worth the cost, and even if you create a pedal board with individual effects units, the ms60b can come along as a utility pedal.

Here’s what I mean by that. It has a good tuner, good compressors, good eq options (graphic or parametric), good pre-amp and amp models, a great noise suppressor, and a lot of other decent effects. So lets say that you have created a pedal board with dedicated effects pedals…a tuner, compressor, and a preamp pedal. You go to play live and the room is too boomy. You can use the Zoom’s eq section to tame the offending frequency. Or say your tuner pedal malfunctions—you can use the Zoom’s.

I am a guitar player too (used to gig as a lead player), and I used to only use individual pedals. But there came a point when the multi-effects started sounding good enough that it wasn’t worth it for me to pay for individual effects anymore, or carry around a heavy pedalboard that you have to tap dance on/off a bunch of effects on every other song. I switched to a Boss ME 80 and it did everything that I needed and sounded almost as good. For bass, the ms60b is my choice though….very small footprint, low cost, and a lot of great tones.

For what you need? Really only a tuner, maybe a compressor. If we're now talking about what you want, there's tons of pages here discussing that rabbit hole, have at it.

I also spent my first 20 years of playing without using any effects. I joined a piano trio and decided that I wanted to fill out some of the space a guitar might take. I started with the Zoom MS-60B+. That was about a year ago. I've since purchased lots of other pedals like the Source Audio Aftershock, C4 and Ultra Wave. I still use the Zoom though. It's a great pedal to try lots of different sounds. Good luck on your search.

I'm completely new to using effect pedals in my 20+ years of playing, but the new cover band I joined could benefit from it.

I was considering the Boss ME-90B. It seems to have a lot of the effects I would need and use. The reviews I've seen look decent but I was curious if anyone had any real-world experience? Love it? Hate it? Why?

I know there is an analog vs digital debate but portability and cost have steered me towards a digital multeffect pedal, but any and all suggestions are welcome.

It all depends on what kind of music you're playing. I play hard rock and heavy metal and I have 3 pedals: a compressor (Aguilar TLC Compressor), a distortion pedal (Aguilar Agro), and a phaser (MXR Phase 90). I didn't get into effects until a few years ago and it took maybe 13 years to get into effects.
