Which G&L - JB-2 and SB-2 players, please help.

The SB2 is flat out the best sounding bass for rock IMHO. It out-P's any P I have played. It smokes my 50th anniv P.

I would recommend LaBella Deep Talkin Flats for extra thumpiness.

I bought a Deluxe American P when they first came out, and sold it two months later. I just couldn't get it to sound like a "P"....I think the reason was that the Split P pickup was not located the same distance from the bridge as it was on the conventional P bass. I have an American standard P that sounds just killer. I am a recent convert to G&L SB-2, an '89 with Leo's signature. I love the sound, the feel, and everything else about it. Bottom line.... IMO only a P is a P, and the Deluxe American just ain't it.

You could replace the P-deluxe on your list with a standard P..

It would get you a different sound, and a classic.

I haven't played the SB-2, but the descriptions here make we want one!

btw -- I think the L-2500 does as good a job at getting a P sound as any 5 I've played, so the JB might be more different.

L-1500. with a very simple mod, you end up with a very aggressive and surprisingly versatile bass. with that said, the SB-2 is probably the snarliest bass i've ever played.

I've gotta dole out more love for my new SB2. I got it just about a month ago, and it is sooooo sweet! Plain and simple.... it's fast, it's sexy, it snarls, and it's wicked! To me, P's punch through a mix, and that's why I've always loved them..... the SB2 doesn't just punch through the mix.... it walks up and kicks it square in the nuts. I've played my L2000 once since the SB2 arrived, and that was only for about 5 minutes.

Yeah, some basses "cut" through the mix. The SB-2 goes through a mix the way a tank drives through a brick wall.

Asat's ... I really can't imagine why anyone buy's these things... neck dive is a real issue and unless you just have to have the look for that Jennings/Owens/Haggard/Volkalert tribute band ... why ? (Yes I know there is a strap extensder thing but that's really no excuse for a poor design...)

And among other projects I've done. I'm part of a very contemporary R&B-Based rhythm section that is more along the lines of say, Chuck Rainey/Jamerson/Duck Dunne/ doing Etta James, Al Green, Chaka Khan,etc. than Waylon Jennings and Buck Owens.
So there's that theory shot to Hell.

And the audience at the somewhat high-end, sophisticated Venue in which we perform, as well as my fellow talented players, seem to LIKE the "poor design" (I believe it's a Telecaster-shape).

And as you can see, it's a very unattractive instrument.

Seriously, gorgeous, bass there. The Tele shape is simply timeless elegance and translates very well in the ASAT. I have been jonesing for one for some time now. I would love to see them make an ASAT-5.

i think they made a real limited edition ASAT 5. rumor has it, it was a bad neck-diver. my immediate response was, "that's what they said about the 4 string. so, uh... can i get that fiver now?"

i would LOVE to have an ASAT 5.

by the way, that mary kay with wood binding looks real sharp.

I've got a couple of L2000s and a 92 SB2. A fellow bassist who has a 57 P bass and a mid 60s P Bass (yes I hate him) says when I have my L2000 in passive w bass boost and neck pu, which I do for a certain blues gig, it sounds as close to his 57 as anything even more than reissues. I a/b ed it one night it was close but the 57 still had a more bottom end. And he thinks the SB2 sounds like the 60s P bass with more growl. If you find yourself changing the tone controls on your L2500 basses throughout the night the SB2 may not be you cup of tea. I tried a friend's 60 something reissue and as soon as I dug in it got thris weird honky midrange with the bottom dropping out sound...yuk. The SB2 just growls.
