Which gig bag?

I'm looking for an affordable gig bag with a nice size storage pocket for my Fender jazz and have it down to these three. Any comments from owners on which one is better would be appreciated.

I've got that exact RoadRunner, it's really nice.

I don't use it anymore, as I found a hardshell case for what it was originally carrying. For the money, the RoadRunner is worth every penny (the MF price is the same as I paid at GC), but I treat my gear like royalty and I baby everything.

I've had the same bag for a few years... it's the bag I use whenever traveling with only one bass. It's a great bag for $50.

Roadrunner hard shells are very nice and if you do some modifications it even better

I don't use gig bags, but I've read people comment on the importance of how low the bag will hang on your shoulders. If it hangs high, you'll be hitting the head/neck going through door openings.

Just a thought.

i have an old gator bag for 2 solid electric basses that has held up around town for years (i average 4 nites/week)

i have a student who just bought a really nice ibanez bag that has a huge front pocket with its own pull-out bag. the pocket is the full width of the bag. i want one of those real bad but i can't vouch for the durability. i think it was close to a hundred bucks

I'll be the dissenting voice on the Protec Bags. I had one for 3 months, and one day as I was slinging the bag onto my shoulder, the bottom of the zipper split open. My very expensive custom bass slid out and started heading to the floor. I was fortunate enough to get my foot underneath it before it struck, and no damage was done to my bass. I was obviously pretty hacked off about it. I emailed Protec and provided pictures of the bag. They responded, saying they would "look into it"...never heard anything back from them. No offer of a refund, new bag, or even repairing the one I had (not that I would have wanted another one from them). Buyer beware with Protec IMO.

Good to know. I have to say though that personally I wouldn't trust a "very expensive custom bass" to a $30-$50 gig bag in the first place. I use Mono myself but that didn't appear to fit in the price point.

The Protec gig bag actually runs about $100, and it came with the bass from the Luthier, along with a Protec soft side case (which I don't really like because of its bulk), so I had assumed it was a much better bag than it actually turned out to be (the padding was actually pretty thick and protective).

I'm currently shopping for a new higher end gig bag. Been debating between the Mono, Fusion, or Reunion blues brands. I'm leaning more and more toward the Mono. The Fusion bags run about the same price as Mono, seem to be well made and have some really nice protective features, plus add on storage systems and a nice backpack carrying system. There is only one distributor here in the States though (Asfab Music), and they haven't been very communicative with my inquiries, which is turning me off to purchasing one.

I'm currently using a Road Runner bag like the one you posted in the OP and I love it. Well padded and easily fits everything I need with extra room to spare. I' about to order another for my next bass purchase.

Having recently scoured the forum for info on gig bags myself, have you came across probags (www.probag-net.com)? Again, I do not have one but, I read nothing but praise for them. Also, they're the folks that made the well-liked Low End gig bags that are coveted around the forum. Originally I had made up my mind to go with them as I wanted a leather double bag. At around $190 the probag seemed like an obvious choice. Ultimately though, I read so much good about the Mono that I changed my mind - it also helped sway me that I would have to wait about a month for the probag as they're built to order outside uof the US.

I'm extremely happy with the Mono; it's a great bag. The only thing that I read concerning complaints was the fact that other bags had more storage. I have no problems with the storage space in my Mono. Others might want more but it suits me just fine.

While we're here - although presumably outside the OP's desired price range - some others considered were Undercover, Mooradian, iGig and Access. The Undercover bags seem to come highly recommended but, for me, I couldn't find enough pics to clarify that it was rigid enough nor did it have two separate compartments for each bass. The Mooradian is extremely lightweight and concerned me with not providing enough barrier for me to be comfortable with $4000 worth of basses in it. From all points though they receive very high praises. The iGig bags received lots of good marks for the strength of the bag and storage but was said to be relatively heavy. Since i was looking for a double, i did not want something that was said to be on the heavy side. Although I did not know it then, Access makes the newest revision of the Sadowsky Portabag that has received many rave reviews here on TB - it's essentially their Stage 5 bag. I had looked at it then but, not being a double (which is what I preferred) I decided against it. Very nice bag though.

Good luck in your search for a higher-end bag. I know there's lots of choices out there and it took me awhile to make up my mind.

Wow, I'm really digging those Pro-Bags! Their prices are excellent for leather bags, and it looks like they can do some custom stuff.
One of the things I liked about the Fusion bags is the system they have that provides the ability to attach an accessory bag to the gig bag. I'll bet Pro-Bags can easily do something like that with one of their briefcases and a couple of attachment clips or rings. I was prepared to drop about $300 on the Fusion bags, and judging by Pro-Bags prices, I bet I can have something similar built for close to that price.

If they can do what I want, then I think I've found the bag I'm looking for. I'll be contacting them today.

I had a S&K soft case and although the case was very sturdy and had plenty of compartments it was not balanced, if you put it down it fell over on it's top side also the weight was ridiculous. With my bass and accessories in that case it was heavier than my Markbass 112 combo so it's back to a conventional gig bag for me.

Because I have a $53 credit with MF and I like the look more of the lakie bag.
