Double Bass Which Head to go with my EA Cabs?

Peter, i have the possibility to buy a VL208. I have still to decide about the head (i think between AI and Doubler).I play most mainstream jazz (also bow) and i like a woody percussive kind of sound (no stringy)with fondamental and not too much harmonics (think Bob Hurst, Wilbur Ware..)
Actually i play a dark sounding czech bass+realist+GK 150 (weich strings ), this set up sounds warm and round (maybe too much) but lacks a little in definition and works only for very quiet gigs; if i push the Gage becomes boomy and the GK begins to "mwaaahh"
How you could describe the differences in sound between those two heads when coupled with this speaker? Why you prefer the Doubler? Which one works best with a dynamic mic ( alone or with pickup)

Given that you're in France I think you're very lucky on that! ;)

I might have been more tempted by the doubler but have heard very little about it - whereas the AI stuff has got many good notices from DB players around here, over the years...:)

As a PS - I was just tickled at how the ad banner on the left, coming up with this thread is for Gollihur Music - with an ad that has the Acoustic Image and EA logos, along with the strap line - The Best in Double Bass amplification - because life is too short for bad tone!

Is that good placement or have I just been subliminally influenced!? :p

It would be hard for me to say which would work best with a realist or a dynamic mic as I use neither. My experience and reason to say I prefer the doubler is based on my use with a planet pickup and/or AMT mic, with my bass.

Every bass and the interaction with the pickup or mic tends to make these NOT hard and fast rules but rather "What works for me". I always tended to get that hollow or honky type sound on the G string around C up to thumb position with the focus and the subtle EQ didn't have enough to really tame that for me. Among other things.

That all being said I've found the Focus while packed with features and headroom just left my tone feeling sterile and to dry. The Doubler seems to impart something into the sound that makes it feel more dynamic and musical to my ear. I actually prefer the Planet pickup to the AMT when paired with the VL208, for that reason I could probably be very happy with the new micro and not bother with the mic functions on the doubler.
