Which jazz basses are handbuilt?

Nordstrand's Nordy jazz basses - wonderful.

Here's the one I received last week - plays like an absolute dream:

there are some fender "masterbuilt" jazz basses too. if you go on their custom shop website and type in "zero fret" a handbuilt dennis galuszka bass comes up.

also, to kevin, what kind of finish is that on the fingerboard? it's awesome!

just need a list of the hand built jazz type basses out there and if there has already been a thread about this for the link(i have searched but can't find this topic)
thankyou in advance
It depends what you mean by "hand built". Most boutique jazz manufacturers (but not all) use CNC made rough parts (ie bodies and neck) and hand finish them. To some people this means a "hand built" bass, to others it means they are "parts basses". However, it may be useful to know what you are thinking when you say "hand-built". As far as I know, no manufacture builds every part of a boutique jazz from scratch (ie hardware, pickups, electronics, pickguard, screws etc) by hand. There is always some machine involvement.

That depends on how you spin it. A hand-built to me is something that's built from scratch. That includes body, neck, etc. Hardware can be outsourced, cause you know that when you get a thing milled out out of brass or whatever, it's brass you're getting.

Sadowsky and the likes are what I would call hand assembled instruments, which are at least as good as the hand built ones, since these manufactures/builders usually are quite picky when it comes to quality parts.

If they use machines or not doesn't really matter to me, as long as they're hand controlled, they're hand built. CNC and such is also great, but then I have to relay on the builders QC.

Nordstrand's Nordy jazz basses - wonderful.

Carey Nordstrand has said that the Nordys aren't all handmade- the parts are CNC made.

Elrick NJS (New Jazz Standards) are handmade, although they're a bit different-looking than some of the Jazz basses out there.

If "handbuilt" means "boutique" here are some of the best jazz basses available.

Sadowsky
Nordstrand
Avella Coppolo
Mike Lull
Atelier Z
Low End
F Clef
Fender Custom Shop
Suhr Pensa
Celinder

What does 100% handbuilt mean? I don't think anyone makes a electric bass that was made without the help of a lathe or table saw.
