I've tried Ubuntu/Kubuntu, Fedora, Gentoo, and currently Arch. I'm pretty happy with Arch and plan on sticking with it for the foreseeable future, but I wouldn't recommend it to a Linux beginner. Gentoo is even worse for beginners.
One of the flavors of Ubuntu is probably the best bet. (I like Kubuntu, but that's personal preference.) Fedora would also be a good choice.
