Which Marcus Miller CD?

+2 for We Want Miles.

I also like both of the solo records of his I have, The Sun Don't Lie and Tales, I probably slightly prefer the first one.

There's also Grover Washington Jr's "Winelight", if you like the smoother end of things. Great bass playing on that record.

This maybe a noobish question. Does anyone have any opinions on what he used on the song? Maybe a 5 or a 4 tuned down? There's no way the song can be played like it sounds on the album in standard E,A,D,G.:rollno:

I pretty sure that was a 4 (5's weren't widespread in 1978 - 1979) and no effects (unless a compressor was used)....Not sure if it was tuned differently, but I doubt it since detuning was not normally used in funk, imho

Searching online revealed "Tales", "The Sun Don't Lie" and "Silver Rain". For those in the know, which of these can you recommend to a guy who leans more towards "mass appeal?" I was most impressed with Marcus Millers playing, what little I saw. Thank you for you help.

Yeah, that special was really tight! He was playing w/George Duke, and Lee Rittenour, only to be joined later w/non-other than the host...RAMSEY LEWIS! The cut that they played spotlighting Marcus was Panther.

I really dig Marcus on David Sanborns "UpFront".
To me, he sounds better on that one than his solo discs.

Or either of the live discs.
Outside of that, IMO they all pretty much have the same elements playing wise.
Just different tunes. Still sound like the other solo discs.
He didn't break any new ground from Sun to Silver really.

Great stuff, just nothing new really:hmm:
