Double Bass Which method?

Just interested which method classical bassists use as their bass bible.

Whether you are a beginner or a student - which method is your teacher taking you through? Or an advanced bassist - surely you must go back to the studies to keep your technique up to scratch.

Yes. It is.

I like both Simandl and Rabbath. Simandl for drilling a single concept to the extreme, and Rabbath for more interesting musical examples.

I voted for other. My teacher loves the Ludwig Streicher "My Way of Playing the Double Bass" books so naturally, thats what he makes me work from.

I studied and played completly with Streicher method, my teacher Gergely Jardany ( http://www.jardanyi.hu/curriculum english.html ) was a student of Ludwig Streicher, we studied everything from his books, and pieces with his fingering. The "My Way of Playing the Double Bass" is an amazing book, and he has also a very good scale book at Doblinger (03 969). I'm very happy that, there are teachers in the States who use Ludwig Streicher method.

I've studied all these methods to some extent or another, including Streicher, so I voted other. Perhaps a some/all/none of the above choice would have worked better for me. Neat poll though!

I use Simandl as a basis but I also like Billie, Rabbath and Petracchi.

I started on Simandl. I mostly stick to that. Truth is I rarely think about it. I just try to play cool stuff.

Really though every time I start to think "I should explore new methods of bass technique" I look at the stack of sh@* that I HAVE to learn for gigs and stuff and I do that instead. Good problem I guess.

Me too. After the Aebersold workshops this year, I'm listening back to the faculty concerts and making little lists of things to improve on and things that I remember hearing but not really going for because my chops aren't yet ready. Technique is a big part of that, but it'll have to be adapted from many sources to accommodate the musical ideas it's supposed to help me execute. Looking forward to it.
