Which Octave & Flanger ?

Hey guys,

Going to get myself a few pedals for myself this christmas, I am looking at Flangers and Octave pedals specifically.

I am not a big effects guy but my second band is starting to sound more Toolish and I thought it would be cool to throw a few effects in on some of the songs.

I have mainly been looking at the EHX Micro POG and the Boss BF-3.

What do you make of these ?

I like the EXH Octave Multiplexer, it has way cool sound with filters etc. built in, though the MicroPog tracking is amazing and if you like it, it also can provide an upper octave at the same time the sub-octave is added.

I have both octavers above and the Boss OC-2 which certainly has it's sound too, though I prefer the EXH ones (just mho).

Flanger, no idea, not my teacup.

+1...I agree with Optimus 100%...The microPOG is the best tracking octave pedal I've used...and has both up and down...very nice...I also agree on the MXR Flanger!...I have the M-117R, and love it...

Don't like flangers, so am no help there.

For a cheap octave-down which tracks well (and has a bunch of filters and synthy weirdness thrown in for free) the digitech bass synth wah is a great buy. Obviously the micropog is cool, if you got more $ or need and octave up. Or a Whammy?

I had a BF-2 (green label), but sold it when I got the MXR...the MXR (IMO) allowed me more flexibility to dial in a nice dark subtle flange...which I like...you can still dial in a thicker flange with the MXR if you want also...the BF-2 was a bit more of an over the top/wilder flanger...and I felt it was also noisey...you could hear it swishing and swirling even when not playing...The MXR is quiet.

Personally I prefer the sound of an analog octave divider to any digital ones, I've got a Boss OC-2 (Japo) which I love the tone of although it doesn't track nearly as well as something like a Micro Pog will for you. I like fat dirty analog tones, that's just me.

I also have had the MXR Flanger and I really liked the tone I was able to get out of it. But if you're not careful it will instantly make you sound like EVH. I transposed Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love to bass and used to whip that one out live for fun sometimes. Along with the MXR Bass DI's distortion that I was using at the time, instant EVH.

I've used the BOSS BF-3, and it was too subtle to me. I couldn't dial in anything that had any dramatic impact on my tone unless I turned it up to spaceship whooshes. I have an MXR Analog Flanger (M-117R) now, and am totally loving it. :D

As far as octavers, I have used the BOSS OC-3, EHX POG, HOG, and currently have a micro POG coming to me on Monday. I actually moved from the HOG down to the micro POG because of space constraints on my board, and I found myself only using the octave up/down effect on the HOG and the -2, +5th +1.5, +2, +2.33, +3, and +4 as well as all the silly expression modes were just more than I really needed/used. Wasn't worth the pedalboard real estate to keep it. :atoz:

can i suggest the DOD stereo bass flanger - the only flanger i ever tried and liked. i did try out the MXR, the BF3, and i also have a BF2, but they just didn't have the 'right' sound for me. The great thing about the DOD is that you can pick them up cheap, and they more or less hold their value if you need to flip them.
Octave wise, i hav the OC2, the DOD octoplus (fantastic sounds if set up right!!!), the Digitech Bass Synth Wah, and have treid the Oc3 which didn't impress me much tbh.
if i ever need to get an octave sound, then the DOD or the OC2 are the go to choices for me. (although the mpog is becoming quite attractive! - damned GAS!)

For octave, the micro is excellent, but the full size POG is even better!

For flanger, take a look at the Line6 offering, LiquaFlange. Flies under most people's radar, but offers through-zero flanging & tap tempo. Great unit.

I'm keen on the EHX Deluxe Electric Mistress flanger. That can go from subtle to disgustingly thick. Guess where I leave it.

As for octaves, I've used the Boss OC-2 on guitar (my friend owned one), and I thought that was a good pedal. The OC-3 isn't quite the same, but not horrible. And the EHX pedals are probably all good - I want them to re-release the Deluxe Octave Multiplexer (it looked like a Polychorus, but with yellow panels).

Another DOD endorsement. I had an FX-75(b or c; can't recall which but I remember what it looked like)that I liked better than any other flanger IME. I recently grabbed an FX-72 Stereo Bass Flanger & like it quite a bit, although I'd like to A/B it against the old, non-bass one.

My brother used to have a 75B. It was the first flanger I had ever used, and I tried to get one on the eBay a while back. Great pedal, though I find the DEM, Psycho Flange and Polychorus to be my triumvirate of flange.
