It’s not on the list, but when someone is very obviously asking a gear-specific question about how their idol sounds, and get bashed into oblivion with “tone is in the fingers.” It’s become the most frustrating thing to me. It’s like the community hears the gunshot that starts the race to gatekeeping. “I’ve got this one” says the first responder. “I’ll back you” says the next, followed by “I’ll do it too, but with an added anecdote.”
I think everyone knows, from very beginner to world-class, that practice makes perfect, and the road to getting better is long and excruciating. The person is very clearly trying to find out the differences in gear - pedals, amps, basses, strings, etc. Please, for the love of carrots, just answer the question if you can and don’t respond or (express interest in learning the answer yourself) if you don’t know.
Flea on a Wal sounds like Flea on a Wal, which is different from Flea on a Modulus, which is different from Flea on a Fender Jazz.
They all sound like Flea, but there are very obvious tone differences between them. It is these types of differences that I see people ask about and get put in their place over.
Seriously, “the tone is in the fingers” is the accurate and obvious answer to the question that very clearly wasn’t asked.
