I've always felt the older stingrays had better woods, more birdseye, better action, and just sounded 'better'. Everyone I've tried that's post 2000 or so has lacked birdseye, felt cheaper, and had more buzzing overall. Just my opinion though.. Go w/ your gut.
Stay low, the EBMM black van is pulling up to your house. The Stingrays ARE built like tanks, but that damn plastic battery housing is the achilles heel. I've replaced more than 2 in a short period of time.
action and buzz are both something you can take care of on just about any bass. i dont understand why people bring thing us... grab some allen wreches and turn things (truss rod, maybe saddle screws) and the buzz will go away if you know what you're doing. if u dunno what you're doing find someone who does and $30 later its all good.
birdseye still shows up on Stingrays but its random - also, birdseye maple is less abundant than it used to be - so, ya, less SR's have em but they're out there.

Nothing happened in or around 2000 that would cause the basses to be better or worse. You're more than welcome to your 'feeling', of course, but it isn't supported by reality.
