Which SX?

Of the 3 you mentioned, I have only owned the sjb 57 (in vintage yellow). Though I also owned a 5 string sx ash Jazz.

I found the SJB 57 to be quite a nice bass. The fretts were well attended to, and the tone was very well, jazz bass. I bought one of the most recent bach of vintage yellow ones, and the yellow color is actually a really cool creamy vintage white, with some yellowing. With the vintage yellowed neck that it comes with, it looks very much like a vintage fender.

Either the 57 or the 62 would be a good choice, just pick the one that you like the look of best. By all accounts the only difference between the 57 and the 62 is the fingerboard and color.

I would avoid the SPJ ash because of the poor wood matching, and SX ash bodies are very heavy!

FYI There are other codes, but for most SX basses the model designation codes are ,

"62" refers to rosewood fingerboards
"57" refers to maple fingerboards
"75" refers to maple boards with block inlays
"sjb" jazz bass style
"spb" pbass
"spj" p/J style

Emailed Kurt again about weight, got these responses:

Well the weights are just estimates - some SPJ Ash models will weigh 7 and some will weigh eight for example. In general, the SPJ models are all lighter than the SJB models. - some of the Ash ones are heavier and some are lighter than the alder models.

Oh and to follow up, pretty much all the SPJ models are less than 9 lbs so you should be safe there, the alder might be closer to the 7 on average

Also, nothing against vintage yellow, but I would prefer sunburst, black or a natural wood color.

Plus I have a bass that's a champagne in color, so I'd like to venture in a different direction of the color spectrum.

I made up my mind. I'm gonna go with the SJB-57 in 3TS (whenever they get them restocked). Swap the pickguard with a tortoise one. Swap the knobs for the old Fender ones. Swap the bridge and pickups if I'm not satisfied with them.
