Which wire goes where...

I've never done any wiring myself, so I decided to tackle this and learn a bit. This is probably pretty simple, but I just want to double check.

I've got a black wire and a green wire coming from the preamp, and a black from the battery. I have a barrel jack with three prongs, one long, one medium, one short. (see pic)

If it matters, it's an EMG pre with EMG active pickups on an Ibanez SR506.

Okay, I wired it up last night. Green to the short post, battery to the middle post, and the black from the pre went to the long post.

Long story short, it works, but it's really noisy. There is lots of hiss/hum/white noise when turned up. However, these pickups are REALLY loud, even with my practice amp volume on 1, it's thumping and vibrating the room! Many times louder than the stock pickups.

Any clue what the noise might be from? Did I wire it wrong? Bad solder connections maybe?
 
The 1/4" jack used is a stereo jack for this application. The wiring for the jack should be TIP to pickup output, RING to battery - terminal, and SLEEVE to chassis ground for the bass. DO NOT LEAVE THE BASS PLUGGED IN WHEN NOT IN USE, the cable being plugged into the bass completes the circuit and turns the preamp on causing battery drain even if you're not playing. ALWAYS unplug. As far as the noise, are you using the proper value pots for the job? EMG pickups are isolated and don't require grounding. If it is more of a hiss, that can be tuned down by a capacitor in the tone circuit. You will need to use a higher value, probably in the neighborhood of .1 microfarad. This will need to go from the center post of the tone pot to chassis ground. The higher the capacitor value the more HIGHS will be shunted to ground. Good luck.

I've got the jack wired properly now, according to the best of my knowledge. The pots are EMG pots that came with the preamp, so I hope they are right.

The noise is a white noise, static, I guess you could call it a hiss. It becomes most noticable when I turn the volume past 12 o'clock or so on either amp I've got. It doesn't matter if the bass volume is up or not, still noisy.
