While effects send create a new channel?

I did a search and found nothing on this, but it's a weird search phrase. Also, I wasn't sure if this should go in Amps or Effects.

Anyways, I've never actually used the Effect send/ return plugs on my amp. But I was thinking earlier and remembered something someone told me about how the key to a clean distortion is having two distortions - one clean and one distorted. If I were to use the effects send, run that into my pedal, and plug it into the effects return, would it have a separate channel for effects?

Also, in order to fill up Sonic Space with one guitarist leaving, I might experiment with running an octave up/distortion channel with a clean normal input.

Anyways, my question is, would it run a separate channel or just add effects to the clean one? I'd try it, but my amp's kept at my drummer's house, and I don't have enough instrument cables.

Only if the FX loop has a blend - otherwise, you're running the whole signal through the pedal.

The effects loop puts your effects after your pre-amp. That's about it.

lol, that probably sounded really stupid. What I meant is, why use that versus just plugging straight into the FX?

The loop on the back of your amp was designed for line level, or rack mounted outboard gear. There really is no good reason to use it with most stomp boxes.

Thanks. So I don't have to start a new thread, I'm going to ask a related question here.

If I want to create a second channel, how would I do it? Ideally I'd probably have a separate amp, but in this case, I'd like to experiment with something else. My amp has a Passive and Active input, so I was wondering if there was a sort of Y cable I could use or something like that? I'm new at all this.

The easiest way to do it is to get a blend pedal, and put your distortion pedal in the loop of that blend pedal. Put that between your bass and the input to your amp. There are quite a few out there, but the Boss LS-2 is the inexpensive way to get there.
