rattyman- Awesome tunes man!! You guys really got the right feel going on.

Two questions, In the second video, what is the drummer running his mic through?

And what kind of midi pickup and foot controller are you using? It sounds like you have switches for different programmed filter sweeps and waveforms plus an expression pedal or two??

Hi mate,
Thanks for the feedback:) In the second video i am running the mic through Abletons native vocoder plugin. I think the vocoder was only introduced from Ableton 8 onwards. It works pretty well. The MIDI pickup we use comes with the Roland V-bass. The foot controller we use is just an expression pedal, we use this to control the filter cut-off and LFO modulation in native instruments Massive and FM8.
We use switches on the Akai MIDI keyboard for control changes in Ableton so we can switch between sounds on the bass.

Hey, is that the VB-99? Or what is it? Do you know if it would accept other midi pups and if they do what you might recommend? Sorry for the question barrage but I've been very interested in doing this for a long time and the sounds you're getting is everything I've wanted!

Yeah its the VB-99. It will only accept the pickup that comes with the unit, i dont think you can use anything else as it has a custom plug. Happy to answer your questions:) It was a headache for us figuring out how to do this because no-body else was so fire away.

My friend has been using this:<br>http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/FCB1010.aspx<br>He got it for about $70 USD off of craigslist. I'm sure you'd be able to use it with the V-bass. The board has a 5-pin DIN type out and the VB has 5-pin DIN type in. I'm sure you might be able to find a similar deal in austrailia.<br> Last question: what exactly are you using your computer to handle during your live performances?

We both run Ableton on seperate laptops. The program essentially acts as a mixer that supports the VST synths and samplers (mostly drumrack) that we use when playing live. Each string on the bass is mapped to a different synth, and sometimes one string is mapped to drumrack (ie each fret will trigger a different sample). For the drums we use drumrack for all the percussion sounds and sometimes for bassnotes which you can setup step sequences for (so i can play basslines with one trigger pad). So ineffect, we use the computers to handle everything!

We mostly use the VB-99 for its MIDI conversion, but we also us some of the inbuilt synthesis as it actually has some pretty good sounds. Yes we have a lot of experience using Massive, and FM8 also.

OK that's what I thought. I'm looking into getting my hands on a midi bass by peavey. Once I have that I'm pretty much going to be set. I figure that between ableton and logic I'll have all the sounds I'll need. What made you buy a $1,000 pitch-midi interface when you could have done much better with a midi-bass?

There are probably better or different options out there but we chose the VB to give it a go and seems to work fine. My bass player has a favourite bass that he likes to play too (musicman stingray) so using a MIDI pickup suits us. I was using plugins through logic before i bought Ableton, but Logic seems to demand more of the CPU than Ableton, so you wont get as good latency with Logic. Would definately recommend Ableton over logic when running VSTs for anything live. Good luck with your project:)

rattyman- lovin our tunes. def have the dubstep sound figured out. post more tunes!

im not certain how much of what these guys do is live... looks like the drums and some parts on bass. but the rest seems to be off of the laptop. sounds dark and dirty regardless...
