Great suggestions so far, but realize that many of the noted bassists, except for Mingus, where not usually leaders. Albums by Miles Davis are going to feature a lot of the great players and are a good place to start. But if you can find some Smithsonian Historical Jazz compilations those are cool and cover a lot of older stuff, check out Slam Stewart, who scat soloed singing an octave above what he was playing on his bass. Scott LaFaro is highlighted on Bill Evans trio recordings, especially "Live at the Village Vanguard" and "Waltz for Debby"; plus Bill worked with a number of other greats like Eddie Gomez and Michael Moore (already mentioned above).
