I had a briefcase and i loved the sound, However I quickly realized that the drawback to the PJB equipment (in my opinion) is the relatively low efficiency of the speakers. Those lil 5 inch piranha drivers are some POWER HUNGRY LITTLE MOTHERS....I suspect that a 4X5 suitcase extension cabinet would sound just great if you were driving it with an SVT or iAMP 500.
The 6 speaker box with neos would probably sound equally good with the same amps. I think that part of the problem is that a lot of folks don't understand just how much power these little speakers need to really "sound"

my taste runs more towards high efficiency speakers that give max output for the watts in.

I heard the suitcase w/extension and was underwhelmed. This upright bassist bought the setup. I thought for that money there is so much out there that does so much more and is actually more portable. Little speakers can do a lot. ie. the SWR BBII and Henry 8x8.

The 5" speakers used by PJB are not all the same. The ones in the small combos are completely different to those in the large cabs because they are designed to produce deep bass from a small enclosure and thus suffer from low sensitivity.

In theory the whole concept works and makes sense. In practice, mmm, maybe not. At home the hifi runs a pair of 6.5" woofers, the bass repsonse in room is at times hard to believe, they are super fast and tight. I debate that a typical 12" or 15" with more cone mass and even using lots of power with high damping factor can compete in terms of transient response. But then, we don't play hifi's, it's bass. That low e and specialy the b are often below the main envelope of response in most speakers so does the hifi approach and theory etc really count?
There's so much not just good but really great gear out there that may not be ultra high tech but leaves nothing to desire so while i think inovation is great, may be totally unessacery in this arena.
I understand not all but how common is it to want that fat P or boppy jazz bass funk. Back in the vintage days they used vintage gear and it sounded and sounds great to me.
I like Geddy Lees answer to how he keeps up with bass technology, he doesn't because it's not relevant. What they had in 72 still applies for the meat and potatoes.

I've had a Neo 6B for a couple of months now and am more than satisfied with it. It has tons of low end. I think people confuse it with not having any balls because it's so clear and detailed down low. To break it in I hooked up a drum machine and ran it at high volume for a while. Jeezum! When the kick would trigger it was like being punched in the chest. Very, very visceral.
But let's put it in perspective. Those 6 five inch drivers only have the same surface area as one 12 so you're not going to be 'king of the world' no matter how hard you try.

I like 'em. A lot. Gigged with tons of stuff. PJB Neo's are my go-to's. I don't play at screamin' loud volumes.
My only qualm with them, other then I probably won't personally like them myself, is they claim that you can get the deep bass you can from many other larger speakers, but according to alot of people don't. Never tried one in person, but I can't imagine them catching on with many Dub or Reggae players if what's been said is true, can imagine they're good for a bright, present modern tone without too much low bass though.
We tested the 8B in Issue 1. The deepest bass of the 3 cabinets tested in that issue came from the 8B, besting a pair of 2x12's...by a good margin. Real world testing, as well as our lab testing, were in agreement.
I've brought my PJB Briefcase to a rehearsal with full band and gotten away with using just that amp. But placement in the room is key - it's got to be near a wall (hard to do at an outdoor gig!) and use the room to help the sound. But it was DOABLE, and for an amp that's smaller than your average desktop computer tower, that's saying a lot. I do plan to sell mine, however, and possibly get the SuperFlightcase 250 instead. Portability is now a fact of life for me - if I can't move it, it's useless to own it.
It's not that it doesn't have low end, it's just that because it's one of those "because I can" cabs, the type of low end it puts out is kind of "eh" to me. Doesn't seem to have any drive to it, like it just sort of lays there. I like low end pushed out by speakers suited to the job, not by an amalgam of speakers that aren't built for it.
I really don't get this thread or the other one. Are you going to have a series of these where you come on here and rip the manufacturers whose products you dislike? How about you just don't buy them? Do you think your commentary is going to dissuade someone who likes PJB from buying his products?
Most people here recommend that buyers play the gear before they buy it. If they play PJB gear and like it, it's the right product for them. Your dislike of that gear is essentially irrelevant, and your incessant ranting is immature and tiring.

There are plenty of threads pumping up gear, why is it so wrong to start a thread about a product that didn't live up to expectations? Are we only able to say nice things about products we try.
Despite the advice of "play it yourself", lots of buyers cant and wont do that. As a consumer i like finding out the good and the bad about a product before i buy it.
