Double Bass Who gets into Curtis?

Can't the admins just ban these people? It's really irritating.

All of you are pretty bad. Y'all know how much practice it takes to break out of the pack, yet, clearly, some of you spend more time on here bickering with each other like children. It gives a bad image to the rest of us, who take what we do seriously, and only come here to read the news in our field. Grow up, be adults, and be a bass players. There's no crying in baseball.

As I said before, back to the topic.

I use talk bass as entertainment. You ,Calvin, take it very seriously trying to further yourself as a bass player.

Res Ipsa Loquitur. Guess which of the two uses of TB described above trumps which in the game of rock-paper-scissors? As a non-orchestral player, I usually try not to get involved in the orchestral forums, but the attitude that "entertainment trumps infomation/networking" is not what the forum is about. Any more trolling in these forums will be infracted. This is getting ridiculous. Consider this a last warning.

To answer the original poster, these stats are according to US News and World Reports for 2007

Curtis Institute of Music Philadelphia, PA Fall 2007 Acceptance rate:
4.8 %
Curtis has the lowest acceptance rate of any college in America
and just for kicks the next four hardest schools to get into

Juilliard School New York, NY Fall 2007 Acceptance rate:
7.7 %

Harvard University Cambridge, MA Fall 2007 Acceptance rate:
9.2 %

Princeton University Princeton, NJ Fall 2007 Acceptance rate:
9.7 %

Yale University New Haven, CT Fall 2007 Acceptance rate:
9.9 %

Can you really quantify what the best bass studio in the country is?

For grad school, I'm applying for PhD's in physics but I'm also looking to apply for MM in double-bass. This is my list, and I think everyone's would be different:

1 Juilliard/MSM
1 RCM/Guildhall
2 NEC
2 Yale
3 Peabody
3 Northwestern
4 SF Conservatory
5 Rice

I made my list this way based on where I want to go for my PhD and what music school is the closest as well as on what teacher I want to study with.

thats depressing

acceptance rates aren't really applicable to music schools. way to many variables that are different from other academic schools.

Case in point, is Juilliard really the second best bass studio in the country?

I get your point. I don't remember saying anything about it being the best only the lowest in acceptance. The question was who gets into Curtis. The answer in 2007 was 4.8 % of applicants plain and simple. Anything beyond that is you projecting something personal on a very straight forward answer.

Simpson's Paradox, guys...

How many people applied for Curtis in 07? Definitely fewer than the number that applied for Harvard, for instance. Therefore, when the data comes out regarding the percentage admitted, the data will be skewed because the number of applicants to the two schools is so vastly different.

How will the percentages be skewed? 10% of 5 and 10% of 5,000 are different in number and not in percentage. Percentage is percentage, not amount. If I'm wrong please explain. Again, this is just a figure. At any rate 4.8 of 20 is not even 1 person, still pretty slim odds of getting in. I've never tried to say that Curtis was the best. I never said anything you implied I did. All I said was "in 2007 4.8% of applicants were admitted" FACT!

What comparison?

He meant between Curtis (few students) and Harvard (many students).

To take his point further;

Try comparing the crime rate of Los Angeles with the crime rate of Conway Springs, Kansas. You can put the two rates next to each other and the numbers technichly mean the same thing but the scale is so different that you can't make many conclusions from the comparison.

If 10 people live in Conway Springs, and 1 of those 10 people is a real pain in the ass, drunk, violent mofo you would prolly hate it while on the other hand that same 10% crime rate might not be as noticible in parts of L.A. because it's all concentrated in a nasty part of town.

Didn't think so. (wishful thinking lol) I understand Simpson's Paradox. But really I put the other figures for hoohaws. At any rate I've seen a lot of talk about going to Curtis and thought it might be an interesting figure. I am an Ed/Performance dual major. So maybe someday I'll be trying to prepare students for Curtis. For me, I'm not that interested. Just an informative tidbit.
