it's a wash but I really like both bands and bassist so they must be doing something right...........Add Cliff Williams to the list and you have the probably the 3 best selling bands of the 80's, so they must be doing something right. Maybe the non-musicians just want a good groove/song and don't care about super-complex bass lines.

If we separate out notes plucked versus different notes in a song, Cliff probably wins out by a landslide.

Roger Waters is a little more melodic and Adam Clayton is more 8th note driving bass lines.

For cashing in on a simple bass riff I'd go with John Deacon of QUEEN.
'Another One Bites the Dust" was their #1 U.S. single of all time.
His bass-playing was deceptively simple though he was an extremely melodic player!

I think Bernard Edwards bassline from 'Good Times' was the inspiration for 'Another One Bites the Dust' if not it was a part of it.

John Deacon had some simple stuff and some complex stuff - defiantly not a 'lead bass' player but brilliant most of the time (think crazy little thing called love on that fretless P)


I'd say slow country with 80% half and quarter notes might be the highest pay per note.

Adam Clayton. Roger Waters might be making more money (or is he?), but not exclusively for playing bass, he's singer and songwriter too. But money-per-note just playing bass, got to be Clayton.

Too much to consider when it comes to getting paid "per note" on the bass. Roger's main focus was being the songwriter...that's where the real money is for a band member. And then Gilmour recorded many of the bass parts instead of Roger.

Clayton recorded his own lines.
