I didn't mean it was a backing track just that the VST instruments you have used sound just that - like synthetic instruments.

I think your voice / this tune would have worked better with a more natural feel and authentic instruments.

Well, sure, that is true. If this were to be a serious recording, I'd add a couple of real violin tracks.

Thats the one thing about garage band. The digital format does not grab vocals very well. Maybe with a serious condenser mic, and a pre-amp but I just used a Shure 58, straight in.

I think it shows how some people can not like something -- even be critical, but they're assessing the music objectively. And then there are those who,if they simply don't like something, or don't understand it, or it isn't about Cliff Burton or Badass bridges, they feel it should be derided.

Hey, you can't defend something someone doesn't like. But I've gotten production work based on that clip. I'm doing a score for an indie film and I've worked as a singer on thousands of gigs and session work and as a back up singer for major acts. Now, that STILL doesn't mean you have to like it! But for someone to say things like "Um...your singing isn't wonderful" implies that he's the one to tell me it's inept -- and then hide behind the "well you asked" mantra.

Bottom line. It doesn't matter. But it is interesting and it's a good reminder how valueless so many opinions are. They are no more valid as my opinion on quantum physics is to Stephan Hawking's opinion on quantum physics. I'd just as soon take an intelligent criticism than a mindless compliment. I can learn more. But negativity based on prejudice or myopia is worthless. The trick is to know which is which.

You asked people to judge a piece of music, which is a very subjective thing to do (as much as we may try to hide our biases). You got defensive pretty quickly when a couple of posters said things you didn't like. If someone listens to a song and her opinion is that it sounds dated and annoying, then she might not be able to help but feel that way. You never asked for unbiased, neutral feedback in the original post. Despite that, you respond like you are being attacked.

In many of your threads, you basically open a can of worms, and then at some point in the thread you get defensive when people start picking them up and throwing them around.

I didn't by any means hate this piece . I'm by no means enamored with it either .
The woman's part sounds like a man trying to sing like a woman ( which is what you did )
Both voices aren't always complimentary to each other .
I imagine you put some time into this . There is a lot going
First thing that popped to mind was the piano synth sound . The whole thing sounds like it should be on a japanese made video game
Those are just my two cents

Nah, that's not true at all. It's funny though -- even though I went out of my way to thank everyone, you launch into the "you asked and then felt attacked" schtick. The whole thread was to show how even if I made sure I didn't, there'd be someone who would say I did. And there you go. It's actually kind of interesting.

No argument there. But I have to wonder -- if someone did a RUSH cover, would people be complaining that the fidelity of the backing track wasn't top notch? I doubt it.

My point is, it's something to showcase ability, not compete with a million dollar recording of a symphony orchestra. But it's interesting that the criticism tends to concentrate on that -- YET, only here on talkbass! Other opinions, elsewhere, differ greatly. I'm trying to figure out what that is. I have my theories. :)

You don't see how the facetious tone of these posts sounds defensive? Even after you claim the people who don't like it are criticizing it simply because it isn't all about "Cliff Burton and Badass bridges" and "Rush covers"? That sounds a little defensive to me, but I'm sorry if I've misinterpreted your words.
