I found the orchestration to be rather nicely done, however the vocals, particularly the high voice seemed pitchy in conjunction with a reasonably well done lower, some note choices on the upper were suspect - okay, to be blunt, there were moments that made me cringe. :hiding:
Overall, I liked the imagination and the approach. Nice work.

My point is, it's something to showcase ability, not compete with a million dollar recording of a symphony orchestra. But it's interesting that the criticism tends to concentrate on that -- YET, only here on talkbass! Other opinions, elsewhere, differ greatly. I'm trying to figure out what that is. I have my theories. :)

Well we are on a website dedicated to Bass so i imagine there might be a bias towards Rush with some ;)
About the fidelity of the backing track . I don't know the original composition offhand from Westside Story and i am sure there are quite a few people here who don't as well. Any feedback given from me had to do with what i heard not by comparison .

mmmm....I sorta liked it. Not perfect, but considering everything, I think you did a really good job. I sure wouldn't have the cojones to try the male and female vocals myself and then post it on TB!

The high vocals sounded kind of silly, but other than that I thought everything fit together well. I also don't know the original composition, but I thought it was fine despite its lack of Geddy, Cliff, and Hi-mass bridges. ;)

I liked it, but I kind of expected more. I thought that a little after the first song started (pretty much the only one I listened to) it was gonna rock out hard or something like that.

Well, in my opinion it would be better that way, although a lot of the music I listen to ends up that way, so I'm pretty used to it.

But, who am I to criticize? I've never arranged or written any songs.

No defense, but I hafta have a little fun sometimes when I disagree, otherwise it just becomes a pissfest. I think a lot of times what someone means to say and how it's read can be very different -- especially when being glib on a message board.

I'm of the same school. I like muscular music. And since bass and drums are the instruments on which I'm most accomplished, I like stuff that hits hard (ala' my sig) so I was sticking my neck out with this -- but I wanted to go with a complete departure. Orchestration is, in many ways, the final frontier in musicality. It's endless, it's humbling, hard as hell and a lot of fun.

If I heard something like that at an open-mic night, I'd be fairly impressed. Not the greatest performance or recording, but I'm sure it was a learning experience just putting it together. Kudos for stretching your horizons and hangin' it out there!

Agree that orchestration is on the upper echelon of musicality. One of my most favorite musicians in the world, Trevor Rabin, went from guitar-pop star in South Africa (with Rabbit) to touring as the lead guitarist with YES in the 80's and is now doing big blockbuster movie soundtracks. I just wish I had the abundance of talent to follow that musical progression.

Just listened to it. It's bad.

The instrumentation was fine but the main thing that ruined it was you trying to sing like a girl and doing a very bad job of it. I hope you haven't convinced yourself you're good at it, because you aren't.

Was just hoppin round youtube lookin for surf music with a pronounced bassline and found a bunch of your stuff - really creative work with lots of talent.
Now to resurrect this thread - I didn't care for a number of the male/female vocal passages in the "one hand one heart" song but the instrumental was good and the creativity was great. If I were an instructor in one of your music classes I'd give it an "A" for creativity and stretching your musical boundaries and a "C+" for execution. With some Female voice lessons you could easily bump the "C+" to an "B+".
Oh and if I were your anatomy instructor I'd give you an "A+" for balls!
Keep up the great work - especially the Surf stuff.
