For a studio gig, sure, but sound guys are not created equal. If you want to own your tone, I recommend not giving it to somebody else to project live.

Who here doesn't rely on an amp for their sound?

For me part of the fun of going to gigs where you aren't providing the backline is getting a new sound every time! I do my research, for every gig we get I find out who's providing the backline an what amp/DI i'll be using. Then I look up reviews of them and start planning what I'm gonna do. I use an active fender jazz and have a pretty nifty but compact pedalboard. The gigs we've had where we've been thrown in at the last minute are pretty fine too. I don't see "my" tone as rigidly as a lot of the people on here do.
I don't like DI though. I don't have a DI on my pedalboard (can't really justify spending the money as I'm a little hard up at the moment) I hate days when I'm going straight in a DI box.

I do not rely on an amp for my sound - whatever that is. I suppose when I use one (Genz Benz Shutle 3.0-10T Combo and 110 Extension Cab) it is part of may sound - as is anything - but it isn't an integral part of my sound.
I mostly gig with a Pedaltrain Nano board with a Boss TU-2 into a Radial JDI which feeds the FOH. I have a Rolls PMS50 amp on there for my IEM feed from FOH. I use Westone UM-2's and play one of my Roscoe's.
I have never been a big "gotta have my amp and my sound and pants flapping, etc." guy. I usually play my gear, but if I plug into back line I still pretty much sound like me. I think "my sound" has more to do with my bass and (Bartolini) electronics, technique and "signature" licks.

Is the question about going DI or is it about using a straight power amp (dry power only) to push your cabinet rather than a traditional bass amplifier (with EQ, Preamp, and tone character...) ???
I too wonder about using a power amp (dry power) and relying on my preamp DI (MXR M80) to color my tone.... Anyone here use that kind of setup? Have any suggestions on power amps and/or preamps?

Not all those little 9v preamps have enough to push a power amp, though many of them will work well enough. Definitely something you want to consider before going with a pedal like the M80 or VT. I use a VT, and it'll work in a power amp, but I could be getting way more signal out of a preamp that was dedicated to working in power amps.
I go "bass ampless", as in I run from a Rusty Box pre on my board into a power amp then to my cab. This lets me swap my pre on the board to completely change my sound without having the amp doing anything to it.
an amp just acts as a monitor for me, all my tone shaping is from pedals. sometimes, depending on the band or gig, I will use an amp for it's tone, usually an SVT, Hiwatt DR-103, Marshall SLP, Traynor YBA-1 or SF Bassman.
I went 'ampless' a few months ago for playing at church and I'm liking it. More importantly, the sound guy likes it. We have Avoim in-ear monitors, so I don't have to worry about hearing myself from a stage amp.
My chain is bass>tu-3>Soundblox multiwave distortion>Swollen Pickle>Hatrke Bass attack(preamp/DI). I've been impressed by the sound of the Hartke Bass Attack and I keep the Swollen Pickle on a lot to 'smooth out' and deepen my tone on more mellow tunes.

Yes. Bass-board-rack compressor-amp-cabs. The rack compressor, for me, is key. It's been working for five years. I have an Eden Navigator, so it's not like I don't have a nice pre, but I like the setup I have.
